Yeah the lathe will be a challenge but worth it since i dont already have a lathe. I'd have to design it and lock it in before i start machining though. Accuracy wont be too bad, a good dial and straight edge would be handy and maybe a bed scraper. Dont think you'd need that thickness plate (unless its easily accessable at the right price) so I'll be using ~20mm steel plate for rail bed and spindle housing walls then torsion framing the base and epoxy granite filling it. Biggest thing though would be getting it stress releaved as it would be critical for a good accrate machine, then i'd just see a few of the guys i know locally with large cnc mills and get the mounting faces skimmed flat.

Well... it all sounds good in theory, well see what SWMBO says about spending more money first...lol.

Anyway, that machine looks great, keep it going.

    Hi Chris

Your machine looks very pretty. Have you been tarting it up with silver paint?

Just a little etch primer to stop the rusting, as it was starting to rust up due to the long build time.

Got a couple of plates done for the Z axis, hoping to see some movement soon, and my spindle arrived (Teknomotor 1.6KW spindle from damencnc.com)

Does anyone know if the key slot on the spindle is a standard type of key? (8mm wide, 90mm long) as I'm planning on making use of it, if so any suggestions on where to look at buying one?

    Hi Chris,

I have the same spindle and bought some of this McJING Tools Online, worked well and does the job.

    Hi Chris,

Your build is coming along well.

Some progress pictures, not much done due to the holidays. (Y axis complete, Z axis just needing a ballscrew mount made up)

The drive to Z is obviously not direct, so what will you be using?

    Hi Chris,

Looks like a top build in progress!!

I am interested is seeing your Z axis plate and Ball screw mount.

On my set up I had to add a spacer setup (I chose to add spacers to the linear rails) to gain clearance for the Ball screw.

    Cheers,
    Kym

I was planning to use a bit of 10mm plate, "image attached" it would be mounted above the ballscrew meaning that the Z axis will be held up by the ballnut instead of bolts holding it up, only downside I guess is the potential to collect chips ect. but since I'll be machining mostly aluminium and plastics I don't think it'll be a problem.

The mounting plate itself will be threaded and the small 10mm plate will have oversized holes for adjustments.

Alternatively use the grinder and remove one side of the mounting holes and bolt it directly to the plate.

Some work done on the frame, had to do a bit of modifying to fit the enclosure but its looking good now, it'll get sandblasted and powdercoated when the time comes.
