CNC Wiring
Help needed. I have bought the 387 Stepper Kit from Homann Designs with the 22 sheilded cable but I was wondering what size wire is used for wiring the rest of the kit. My electrical knowledge is limited but growing fast. If someone could help out that would be great.
The other thing I was trying to workout is were to fit the resisters on the DB9 connecters.
Thanks Gerry

Hi Gerry,
Wiring depends on what you are wiring up - you knew that.
If it is signal wire such as estop, limit switches and it needs to be shielded. I generally use microphone cable from Altronics here as an example but you might have better luck with Jaycar.
Wire from power supply to G540 can be figure 8 without shielding. Make sure the wire is heavy enough to carry the amps. An example is here but amps might be too low for your power supply so check.
The resistor is soldered to the DB9 connector unerneath the plastic case. It is a job to do and good eyesight, a third hand and plenty of lighting required. Just poke the wire down the centre of the pins and solder in place. Homann has special connectors for the G540 that have the resistor built in - I use those.Cheers,
Rod

22 Gauge wire is fine for the steppers ( only 3.5 amps per stepper )
to feed them from the Power supply unit , 22 gauge is right on the limit of its amp rating (7amps) , so it would be better to "up " the thickness between the PSU and Driver
the wire to the Power supply should be rated to the size of the "fuse/circuit Beaker" that you will plug it into ( you should get an electrician to wire that up ," High voltage ")
and the low voltage " 5 volts " ( if any ) should be ribbon cable or telephone wire
i believe there soldered inside the 9 pin stepper plugs boards , not sure on that one
a handy link http://www.homanndesigns.com/pdfs/EN010_V8.pdfhow come a 10mm peg dont fit in a 10mm hole

Hello Rod and Sawdustsniffer,
Thanks for the help, I will Give Peter a ring on Monday and Talk to him about the connectors and I may Talk to him about the back covers. This maybe a good idea on the mill. I have now down loaded the link that sawdustsniffer pointed out. Again thanks for the help.
Cheers Gerry.
