DIY CNC Router Side Plate Material
I recent saw a awesome DIY CNC Router on U Tube and I noticed the Side Plates were NOT made of metal of any kind.
It looked to me to be Delrin. I was interested as I am planning a Larger Extrusion CNC Router build....(one day) , and was not confident my 6040 would be able to cut the 20mm thick Aluminium Side Plates, in my lifetime....
So, I sent the Gentleman an email asking about the material, and he said it was 'Trespa' or 'HPL'. See his comments below.
I have never heard of that material . Has anyone else? I googled both names and didn't find anything.
Is it known by a different name in Australia?
Just curious.....
I was originally toying with the idea of intially cutting temporary side plates out of a easier-to-machine material, so perfect the design AND maybe cut the final Ali Plates as well.
Not sure thats fesible now.

"The side plates are made of 20mm Trespa. same as HPL.
Trespa plate is made by compressing impregnated paper or wood fibers and epoxy, phenolic or polypropylene resin at high pressure and high temperature. A special surface made with Electronic Beam Curing, a coating technique developed by Trespa, ensures durability and scratch resistance.[3] Due to the ability to add colored pigments to the surface during curing, a variety of colors are possible. The production technique for the plates, which are made of wood, is also called "Dry Forming" technology.[4] In this technique, cheaper pre-pregs instead of the more expensive impregnated paper layers in the production of fiber boards is applied. These prepregs consist of wood fibers and thermosetting resins. This technique was applied for the first time in 1984. Because the surface of Trespa Plate has a dense molecular coating, it is virtually impervious to weather (temperature, UV radiation and humidity). Also, any contamination, such as graffiti, can be removed quite easily. Because of these advantages, the material has been popular since the 1980s in the production of laboratory surfaces and outdoor signage, but also for shower stalls and toilet cubicles in educational, hospital, and campground facilities.
Today Trespa brings HPL Trespa panels under various brand names, with different qualities for indoor and outdoor applications. Other names are used for furniture Trespa Athlon, Trespa Virtuon for indoor applications, Trespa TopLabPLUS, Toplab, for laboratory and Trespa Meteon for outdoor applications.
Its very ridgid and there is no problem while cutting aluminium. They work out verry well for me, no need to replace them in aluminium.
There is one thing that is important. Taping threads through the plate is absolutely fine. But not on the sides of it , it will delaminate."

I think you'll find that Erick, cut his aluminium for his new CNC on a 6040 machine. Have attached a link to his Shed
Thread, where he's posted a pic of the new machine.
Shed....finally post number 175
You might find it's cheaper to use the Aluminium, as the Trespa stuff could be expensive.
