Engraving - Laser Diode
Well i finally received my laser diode and tried it out today.I was looking for something that I could etch wood, plastic, etc and after a bit of looking i settled on a 800mW - 808nm red diode unit.
It comes with the TTL driver as well, so when i work out why Mach3 wont switch my spindle output on and off, i can then drive it with M3 and M5 commands.
The unit is switched on and off at the moment using a switch which grounds the output
I have included a few photos of it and the first engraving I did today, with a video on youtube (unedited) so sorry for the section which has the laser stuck on the bottom right.
I also am having trouble with getting the laser to burn at the beginning of the letter. I'll have to play around with the height a little to ensure i've got it at the optimal distance.

My son and I just watched the video and he was very impressed especially the music it made doing the S.
He also wanted to know if I could get one so we could line up popcorn on the bed and pop them one at a time

(P.S. where did you get it and what was the cost)

That's cool can you get the laser to have a finer cut?

The popcorn maker is available from KaleCNC and the 800mw unit set me back $104 delivered

There are a lot more videos on this and the higher powered blue lasers. I thought for the price it was worth a shot, given post people were trying to flog Diodes for about $80 and this excluded the TTL driver and any Diode housing.
The start of the cut seems to be a slight issue as it has to be precise to get it going. The suggestion is that I use P1000 for a 1 sec pause at the start.
I can get the cut to be finer by increasing the feedrate and some subsequent testing shows that 200mm/min is quite good and keeps the burn churning.
I think for shading i should have bought the more powerful unit and i may venture down that path later or just bite the bullet and put together a 80W CO2 laser.
