    Whoops, I didn't know that.

Why servos instead of steppers, did you just happen to have them lying around?

Does the new one have servos or steppers and if servos, what is the price difference and benefits?

Hi Bob, I started with steppers and wasn't all that happy them, though I had full step drives at the time and not very high power steppers. Didn't now about Gecko's or decent steppers.

I like to dabble a little in electronics at times so I built my own servo drives using the Elm Chan firmware, and got some electrocraft servo's. Machine has been like that ever since. Since the red machine is only using threaded rod for the leadscrews the speed of the servo's is nice, and I get away with my fancy direct coupling system that you guys pointed out at the BBQ

New machine will actually be using hybrid stepper/servo's, bit pricey but will simplify the build considerably.

Actually from an electronics point of view if you are making your own drives servo drives are considerably simpler, half the power FET's and very simple to control. Servo's used to be very expensive but not so much these days, as for which is better, well that will probably be argued over for years to come.

    Cheers.

    Russell.
