    Just my 2c.
In the very dim and very distant past when I used to build and race slot cars, I found that nylon gears would rip the cr@p out of steel gears.

It's been a while... so hello chaps!! I've a question. How hot should a stepper motor run? I've 1.2A stepper (42BYGH610 - to be exact) Im adding to my CNC. Im putting an extruder on it for 3D printing. At least that's the plan. The G540 4 axis control my cnc and a 4 axis xylotex contoller controls the rotary through a second parallel port. I've added the smaller stepper to the Z axis slot on the xylotex and tuned the vref voltage down to 1.44v but it's still getting too hot to the touch. Will this kill my motor?

Here's a quick vid of the progress to date..

    Thanks
    Brad.

Four and a half years between post, nothing wrong with that.

Amazingly good timing though as just the other day I was discussing online with someone the feasibility of adding a 3D print head to my XYZ-Carve.
I have a spare heat ebd and hotend, just need to print an extruder.

    Hi Brad,

60degC is fairly standard for stepper motors. At that temp you can only touch it for a few seconds. I normally try to run them a little cooler though.
That motor will run hot with a Geckodrive (and other PWM/Chopper style drives) due to it's high inductance of 13mH.

    Also with a rated voltage of 6.5V the ideal supply is around 20 x 6.5 = 130V

Just run it at the rated current and at whatever power supply you have and see how you go.

    Cheers,

    Peter

Thanks Peter. Support at Xylotex also confirmed I'd tuned the controller to match the motor correctly so it's just going to run hot.. we'll see how it goes.
