When I bought my ball screws I didnt realise I could have asked for the nut thread to be added. So I bought a metric tap & die set thinking the 10mm die would do the job, but the thread on the nut is much finer then my 10mm die.... my current die says 1.5m on top, so I figure that's the pitch. I'd be guessing I need a 1mm pitch. Anyone know where I can buy one? Online?

    Hi Brad
I fairly sure it will be a 0.75mm pitch thread but check with a thread gauge to make sure. My bearings blocks are 12mm for a 1605 ballscrew so have you got something different?

Can you use a standard 1.5mm pitch nut? Or would there be a clearance issue?

The nuts have a grub screw to lock onto the thread. Probably can do that to a standard nut but the finer thread has better adjustment that a courser thread.

Yeah.. it's a 10mm shaft. I was going to use some other bearings and had it milled to 10mm. Finding a .75mm pitch 10mm die might be an issue so I might just have to go the 1.5mm pitch as Ch4iS has suggested.

Whow... that die is huge 50mm. I'd need the tool to hold it also.

Are the ball screws hardend steel... so how will a die go? Might I need to have it turned at an engineering business.

I think they are only case hardened.

Once they were machined down by Chai the shaft itself shouldnt be hardened.

Local engineering shops should be able to order the die in if sutton manufactures them, but to how much they ripp you off I dont know.

This size might be more to your liking - here
As Chris said only case hardened and the turned part of the shaft is soft enough to put a thread on.

Thanks Gents... your advice / input is most appreciated. I've just been chatting to a friend that might have the correct the die in his workshop. If not, Im thinking the UK one might be just the ticket!!

Im having the legs / frame welded this weekend, and I'll bolt the C-section to the legs.

Lots more pics to come..... and I'm guessing a lot more of the simple questions!!! I generally make costumes, not machinery.

Did some more today... firstly I had a friend look at the nut for the ballscrew bearing. Turns out its a 10mm 1.0 pitch thread. I'll just double check tomorrow at the local nut's and bolts store, then purchase a die.

I think I have an issue with the C-section... one has a twist in it. So I'll try take it back and get another.

The company I purchased the steel from is happy enough to exchange the twisted C-section. Also enquired about 20mm plate to fit the sides of the gantry today.. but thought I might as well get the rest of the aluminium to get the x-axis functional..hopefully.

So using their catalog I added a little more to the plans.

Im toying with the idea of getting some other rails for the gantry. The type that will mount via a single line on anchors into the channels in the alumimium. Im trying to avoid drilling holes in it. Anyone know where I can get some nice rails for a nice price? 1000mm long.
