It depends on what you intend to cut.
I do panels mostly so do not need a lot of travel. Mine are all around the 120 to 150 travel. Don't be tempted to have long travel unless you specifically want it. Longer travel means higher gantry and less rigidity.
With four years of jobs behind me I haven't cut anything thicker than 32mm yet.

    Rod

I doubt I would cut anything thicker than 32mm for sure.. i'll work on that amount of travel then. Maybe at most some 20mm MDF but would think the majority would be 5-10mm acrylic and maybe 10mm aluminium... hows that for a variety. Im doing mechanical eng diploma at tafe and want to get into a mechatronics course. Want to use this for cutting out some parts for some of the ideas i've got floating around in this head of mine and for projects etc

Would these rails be about right for the z axis (some second hand THK)

They are 340 mm long with two blocks each at 56mm x 34mm... if i have a gap between the blocks of 50 - 60mm will give me a base for my router/spindle attachment of about 170mm and allow travel of 170mm... (so maybe a bit long??).

The rail width is 15mm by 15mm

EDIT: Just found a second set that are a bit cheaper, they are 310mm with two blocks at 42mm x 32mm and rail width 15mm by 9.5mm.. this would be about 155 travel with a 70mm gap between blocks and they might be a bit lighter as only 9.5mm high (they are also THK)

    Cheers

    Hi Phil
I have a trailer load of acrylic offcuts up to 6mm thick in clear and coloured up to 300mm wide and 1200mm long but mostly smaller than that so don't go buying any that size. All sorts of grades including polycarb. If you like I can sort some out and you can get a bootload for free.

Perhaps if you PM the Ebay listing I can have a look at the rails for you.
    Cheers,
    Rod

Id love to get some from you!! I would say that most of the stuff I will be playing around with will be the acrylic.

Ill PM you with the details.

    Thanks again
