Greasing Spindles?
Hey Guys
Does anyone know how to go about greasing or lubricating the bearings in the Chinese spindles?
mine is making a very dry bearing noise.
Any help appreciated.
Cheers

Hi Noel,
I would say you will have to pull it apart. I have only had the top off one of mine to fix a wiring problem and when I asked for a drawing to go deeper they could or would not supply one. I wasn't game to go deeper and was able to fix my problem anyway so can't tell you anymore.
It is not obvious on how to dismantle it and I sort of figured it may need a press to push the armature out of the case. The one I was tackling was a water bucket type so a bit more complex than the air cooled.
Maybe try the seller as he might have got drawings since then and if you do find a solution let us know as you will not be the only one doing this down the track.Cheers,
Rod

How do you get the top cover off?
Hi Rod,
I just got a new chinese 2.2kw water cooled spindle.. I really really dont like the look of the audio grade 3 pin connector, to carry up to 2.2kW?? no way! So I want to swap it for something beefier. I removed the four cap head bolts and gave the thing a wiggle as best I could.. but no movement. Can you say how you proceed? I dont want to bruise the cover with screwdriver pry marks.. I'm trying to cut down on mistakes like that so thought I'd ask.
Thanks!

Hi Nastyspill,
The plastic cover should come off fairly easily so looks like yours may be hooking on something.
The microphone connectors are not the best but they do work and they are capable of holding the amps. What I do is make a clamping bracket above the connection to hold the incoming cable. My concern was splitting the light duty plastic cover with an unsupported heavy cable running into it.
If your connection is only three wires then make sure you run an earth up to the spindle. With water cooling you want a good earth for obvious reasons.Cheers,
Rod

hmmm my cover isnt plastic. I'll take a photo and attach it later today. I am refering to the top of the spindle. What looks like steel, painted black.. The connector is mounted through it and the water nipples also thread into it.
Actually here is a link to 3 photos that pretty much resembles mine.. except his is already dismantled.. with no real explaination of how it was done. It appears like it might be a press fit..

and yes.. Mine will be earthed thoroughly.

Hi Mart,
My bad I have been working with the air spindles for so long I forgot the difference.
Ok it will probably require a gentle but sharp tap with a rubber mallet on the side of the cap to release it. There are "O" rings between the cap and the water inlet nipples and these are probably holding it in place. Replace the "O" rings as a safety measure in case they have adherred to the steel and are damaged in removal.
I am impressed with Robofang - one big machine there.Cheers,

Mart,
I had mine apart a few weeks ago. All I did was take out the 4 SHCS and it lifted straight away. As rod said there are 2 o rings to seal thE water passages.
This thread has lots of details along with my post on connected up the earth connection on the unused pin of my 4 pin connector.

Hi Dave,
Yeah I gave my end cover a whack with a piece of 4x2 after I had the bolts out and it dropped away. The wiring inside isn't as heavy as I expected so I guess this connector is up to the task.. Mine is only a 3 pin so I'll remove the cover once more, drill and tap another hole and wire up an earth cable.
Thanks for the link I'll take a look.
Mart.
