    Default Huanyang VFD problem

Cutting a small plaque this morning, and the power dropped out halfway through the job. Discovered that my switchboard safety switch had tripped. Reset that, and all the clocks, and got the shed pc rummimg again. Tried a dry cut, and tripped the switch again.

This is the procedure I used to isolate the problem:

    1) Disconnected everything in the shed, and waited 10 minutes...no problem.

    2) Powered up the VFD, waited 10 minutes...no problem.

    3) Turned on the spindle, and tripped the safety switch after about 20 seconds.

    4) Disconnected the spindle, and pressed the run switch on the vfd tripping the safety switch after about 20 seconds again.

    5) Disconnect the earth from the spindle, and checked all the connections back to earth on the vfd with nothing showing up on my multi meter.

So it looks like I need a new vfd. However, before I go and order one, has anyone experienced this problem, and managed to solve it.

could just be " inrush current " electricaly isolate the earth ( timber or foam under the machine) , no earth wire or any other wire from machine apart from 3 spindle wires connected ( could be earthing through a limit switch ??)
DANGER <MACHINE COULD BE AT 240VOLTS , DO NOT TOUCH IT

if it still trips , disconnect the earth wire from vdf , and test again ( becarefull not to touch any thing metal once vdf earth is disconnected )
if it trips again , its inrush , or a sensitive RCD , ,

if there is no earth a RCD should not trip

what size spindle , a 2.2kw is close to the 10amp max draw from a 10amp circuit

??? blow the dust out of the VDF ????
??? wires worn through in the cable chains ???

Thanks SDS. Everything on the machine was physically disconnected from the power, and the vfd was disconnected from the spindle on last test. So I don't believe it can involve anything else except for the vfd.

your point about a sensitive RCD is valid, but I can't see how I can test for it, since if I disconnect the vfd earth it will take the RCD out of the equation. Can't be inrush current, as the spindle was diconnected for last test (IMO - however I have been known to be wrong).

VFD is 1.5kw, and spindle is 800 wt

with out an earth , an RCD can not trip , they measure incoming power to out going power , and only trip if there is a loss of more than 50mA

    dust inside the VDF ????
1.5kw should only be 7amps , plug every power tool in and turn them on so you draw more than 2000watts , then you have tested the AMP limit of the RCD ( tools only use there rated power at full load ) so a welder might be better

    Default Problem solved

Gave the vfd a good blow out (I should have worn a mask), and all good now. Should have thought of that myself, so thank you SDS.

Once again I have been saved by the forum.
