Magic Smoke Fixer
Hi Guys
Just thought I would offer a recent occurrence of 'magic Smoke' and how to fix it.
When I was wiring up my machine, I initially purchased some Gecko 201 drivers.
Due to not knowing much at that stage, I inadvertently crossed two wires and 'blitzed' all three drives.
I communicated with gecko, who said to send the units back to the USA for evaluation. In the meantime, I had purchased two more 201's - and believe it or not - managed to blitz them too. (Slow learner).
I eventually posted two of the drives back to the States, and received a reply a couple of days later informing me that as more than one Mosfet had been damaged, the drives were not repairable, and offerred to either return them to me at my cost (more money), or they would be happy to bin them over there.
I elected to have them bin them.
I then happened to be talking with a friend of mine who is a mad keen ham radio guru, and an ex-telecom tech.
He curled his lip when I told him that the drives could not be fixed because more than one Mosfet had blown, and he said to leave them with him.
One week later, and only a very few dollars, Greg returned all three 201's to me in 'as-new' condition. All three drives now work perfectly, and only for a relatively few dollars.
So......
If anyone has a similar problem - contact Greg Humphries at Meadows in South Australia - he really is an electronics wizz.
Greg is a great guy, and contact details for Greg are'

Nice heads up as I have fried my G201 once. I assume he can do other stuff too.
Did you ever come across my wiring diagram which i made to help people wire their G201's.
The thing that needs to be kept in mind is not to ground the +5Vdc supply with that of the main supply.
What I found strange was that you only need to supply +5Vdc to the pin (maybe 8 from memory) and thats it. I used my USB port for this and it all works as expected. Mind you it also worked with a common earth for 6 months before it went up in smoke!!
