    Default Ncstudio to Mach3

    Hi from Perth
Has anyone over this way had any experience in converting Ncstudio to Mach3.
I have a Jcut Cnc for the last 5 years and Ncstudio has worked fine but Windows Xp is starting to be a pain.
Just refurbishing the coolant lines to the spindle and all was ok, then Windows would not start up saying that I needed the original set cd for a repair.

Thinking maybe its time for a change.

    Any thoughts would be great

    Thanks
    Peter

    Honestly I'd stick with NCstudio!

I intended to convert my machine over to Mach3 originally, but I've found NCstudio to be absolutely bulletproof.

I've had occasional issues on my other machine with Mach3, but I've never had any issues with NC. Reliable as hell, surprisingly.

    Just my 2c though.

However, if you want to convert, on cnczone there's a member named butterknife who I think has done this before.

    cheers, Ian

    Thanks Ian for the reply
I also like NCstudio, but XP is letting me down and getting hard to get parts for it.

What system are you using ?

I have it all up and running now so touch wood all will go ok

    Many thanks
    Cheers, Peter

Hi Peter, I'm using an old Core 2 Duo proc PC, with 2GB mem I think. NC doesn't require much resources at all, so old PC's cost next to nothing, so I bought a few identical machines at the time and I have 2 disks fitted with RAID1.

If you have a not too old PC with a SATA RAID controller onboard, it would be a good idea to fit two identical (cheap older) disks in RAID1 mode so it will cover for a disk failure.

Disk failure is probably the most likely failure to occur. It's rare the PC itself dies, usually the PSU is the only other thing to go once in a blue moon.

I do love how rock solid NC is, and quite amazed by it considering. I did also purchase a spare NC card when I got my machine but in 9 or so years have never needed it.

I'm not sure what you mean by XP is letting you down, my XP PC is solely dedicated to the CNC machine, and is only used for running NC, absolutely nothing else, not even the network is enabled, and files are transferred from my working laptop to the PC to run. So my XP PC is in pristine state and has never had any issues. I think this is important if you want reliability, to have the machine dedicated to the task.

    cheers, Ian

    Hi Ian

    Thanks for the reply
I am using a dedicated Pc to control the cnc, all other programing is done on my laptop.
The set up has worked great for about 4 years after the mother board played up.
Just lately there have been a few hicups have checked the pc out and all seems to be working ok.

Thinking I made get another NC card and see if there is any difference, The version Iam using at the moment is V5.4.53 thinking this may be a bit on the older side, came with the machine when I bought it back in 2013 second hand

Nc studio has been great to use and made work life very interesting.

I have retired now but seem to be doing more lately, but still enjoy doing woodwork.

    Many thanks for reaching out

    Cheers
    Peter

I got my machine circa ~2010, and finally remembered to check my running version, and it's 5.4.53 same as yours. I do have a later version but have never used it as this one is rock solid.

    cheers, Ian
