This is what I did when I had problems getting it all going, I used a 5V supply from an old mobile phone and it worked fine. I only went to the USB cable to reduce the number of GPO's I need to run everything.
It took a bit to work out the problem I had (very similar to maddog's) as it was an intermittent problem.

    gentlemen i have movement
    Bob,
on my BOB i found a XYZ marked on each pin port
that made tracing the wires back easy all the connections are sound and back to each motor have a positive connection and motor direction appears to be correct (a little unsure on the spindle up and down)
    Geoff,
found the USB cable (thought for a horriable minute i had thrown out)
    connected that
    Ken,
found anf run the driver test
did have one opps i had the pulse set at 35000 (it told me pulse rate was too high) so changed that back to 25000
rebooted everything , fired it up and things moved, you dont know how good that felt.
now that i can sort of crawl i heve to work out how to set soft limits so the stepper doesnt try and drive thru the other side of the machine
find a basic G-Code and load then test it

so thankyou for all you patence and help
    i am slowly getting there
    cheers Tony

    Angry

on my 6545 , the steppers dont have the power too destroy the machine ,

when aluminium hits aluminium the "steppers just loose steps ", nothing bends , if you were to upgrade to larger steppers , then you would need limit switches

if you havent paid for your Mach3 yet , it will only play 1/2 a million lines , you should have test G-codes with mach3 , i think every one does the "road runner "

the trial version of " cut3d" has a 3d leaf bowl , that's pretty good , and free

one thing i did was to rule a line on the table at 0 , twice i bolted down my work peace with the edge past 0mm on the table , set the x and y to its bumpers and mark centre of the bit on the table with pencil

good to hear your up and running
    cheers ken
how come a 10mm peg dont fit in a 10mm hole

upgrading my motor drivers to Gecko's (G201x's) from Homann Designs ( of course ) with a 48 volt PSU almost doubled the power of the steppers and they run so smooth its well worth it , also changed out the BOB for a Optocoupled protection BOB , use it as it is now and see if you think 2x the power is worth $400 , and a night mare in wiring

i went for the G201x's so they dont need to be replaced if i update to huge steppers in the future

bye the way , your machine will never be finished ,

also keep your PC and control box away from dust ( yer its imposable )

    cheers ken

Wrong. We all know exactly how good it feels to go from a know nothing to having a working machine.

    Congratulations Tony.
