    Default On order

    Well the boss said yes.
I have seen a few homemade CNC's around and even spent some time with the man himself Rod. I would like to make one but with money not growing on trees I went for a China body and Homann Design power controller and will get a Love Happy VFD and spindle. Now all I have to do is wait for all the fun.

way to go , dont purchase the crap blue box

wish i did the same , would have saved 6 weeks in setting up

some one must have the designs of the holes in the box for this set up , could mill one out for you , and send it in time , and you do the next blokes ( need a cnc machine to make the control box perfect )

personally i like the cupboard , pc , power supply's above , with filtered air ( upside down draws ) but i get free solid core doors from work ,
?? ask who does your Housing Trust Maintenance in your area , find out there address ,. and get some free solid core doors ( only the bottom 100mm is rotten / the lock is kicked out ( most likely the cops used there ram )) dumpster diving , used 13 doors on mine , at over 400kg , no ones gonna steal it , but you do need gas struts ( from a xd falcon station wagon ) to hold the door up , setting up was a pain , you cant access the draws when the door is up

Well done Dave, pretty close to making that decision myself

Are you getting an air cooled or a water cooled spindle?

    1.5Kw or 0.8Kw?

I believe the mounting bracket on that machine is 65mm, is that correct?

Yes it is. I was going to get the whole kit but I would have to replace bit's of it so I just ordered the body.

lets just hope the couriers are nice to it, it will need a 20mm thick steel plate under the bed , mine flexes enough as it is at 650mm cut

i run a sacrificial virgin level layer of 16mm , then a peace of sacrificial carnage layer ( i dont have to surface the 2nd layer , just predrill the screw holes ), and tonight is the first time ive screwed down a 3rd layer , coz i dont want to move the second layer with a jig cut out , because i haven't finished with that project yet . , all they layers help get rid of the flex of the bed , not a bad thing , if your not using the depth

I will be making a frame for it all to sit on. With being 20mm it will have a bit if weight to it

That's pretty much what I'm thinking - let us know whether you get hit for GST/customs fees on that.

I'd expect there's a more efficient frame you can make to add stiffness than a 20mm slab of steel - maybe using 40mm RHS or something?

ball screw clearance underneath is minimal , to support the top deck ,mine has the y axis brace on top of the ball screw ( 5mm clearance ), 40mm is way too much , 20mm is too much ( loose 20mm of z axis height ), but a 20 mm thick sheet of steel under the deck will do a lot

steel has 1/2 the flex of aluminium , where it is , weight is not a problem , yer , getting it cut costs ( gas axe ) , you should be able to drill holes to line up with the bed ( T channel )holes , and bolt right through

rod , how far do you span your t channel deck ? 900mm? or 300mm, at 900mm it will be like a trampoline , tame the harmonics with spindle rev's ? like i do ?at 900mm a macro to constantly change the spindle rpm between a 100 rpm from what you set it a might work , "a vibration nightmare "

im looking for a 20mm thick steel plate for mine , but looking > is waiting untill one turns up for free )

so the harmonics of the machine , are from the flex of the bed , and the speed of the cutter , if the blades thumping the peace hit the "Harmonics " of the machine , the sound changes , and it will show up "chatter" , on the surface , harmonics happen at any ( integer division of vibration ) , cutting the speed by exactly 1/2 wont help at all , a 1/3 wont help , 10rpm less will help , running the spindle via mach3 , and running a macro to vary the spindle speed with in 100rpm constantly , is something im looking into , even a " knock " sensor in the middle of the bed , will help a huge amount < a bit harder

    Thanks David

I picked up the first bit for my CNC setup today, the computer and monitor that will be used to drive this thing and I will be following in your footsteps, basic machine - no electronics, but I will be getting the 4th axis minus the controller board.

Just waiting for a cheque to come in and my order will be on the way.

Have started designing the stand and electronics enclosure as well.

If you make your stand solid and fix the CNC to it that should fix any flex, I hope. RustyArc will let you know on the tax side.
