Planning my first CNC machine
Been looking at the various builds and have decided to make the plunge. Thought it would be wise to buy the rails, screws & motors first and then make the frame to suit. Here is my initial cut at a list:
X AXIS:
2 x SBR20-950 - 20 mm diameter, 950 mm long supported rail
4 x SBR20-UU - bearing blocks to suit supported rail
1 x RM 1605/1000 - 16 mm diameter, 1000 mm long, 5 lead ball screws end machined to suit support units and couplings
1 x BF20 / 1 x BK20 - support units to suit lead screw
1 x flexible coupling
1 x anti back lash nut to suit lead screw
Y AXIS:
As above except that supported rails are 650 mm long and lead screw 700 mm long
Z AXIS:
As above except that supported rails 300 mm long and lead screw 300 mm long
Gecko 540 4 axis motor controller
4 x KL23H284-35-4B - stepper motos 387 oz-in, 1/4" shaft
1 x KL-350-48 - 48V / 7.3A 115/230V power supply
Questions I have are:
1. Thoughts on the above?
2. Does anyone know if equivalent steppers / power supplies are available in Australia (prefer to support the local economy if I can)?
3. Are 16mm diameter lead screws large enough?
4. 5 lead or 10 lead for the lead screws?
Thanks in advance,
Grant

Hi Grant,
Good to see a new build happening.
From the choices you have made it looks like you have done your homework already.
Design the machine before you order your ballscrews so you can get them machined to the dimensions of your machine. Don't be stuck with the lengths specified as he will cut to any length.
I think you will find the support bearings for 16mm ballscrews are BK/BF12's and not 20's. 5mm pitch ballscrews and 16mm diam for those lengths should be fine.
The support rails for Y and Z can be 16mm which will reduce the gantry weight. No big deal and 20mm will work fine as well.
A very good local supplier for motors and power supplies is here
Keep us posted on your build.Cheers,
Rod

Peter,
Had you down for the Gecko 540, Mach 3 software and switches. Didn't realise you did stepper motors and power supplies as well. Sorry!
