Default A pleasant afternoon in Perth.

Sally and I have just returned home from a brief holiday in WA. We hired a camper and toured the south west region. Very nice part of our country. Weather was very kind to us.

With about three days notice, Rod organised a BBQ afternoon at his place. Invited a few CNC friends over. Rods lovely partner Leonie put on the most amazing spread of salads and BBQ.

And all us blokes stood around and talked CNC.

You should see Morphy in the flesh. Even more impressive than in the pics. A truly beautiful machine. And bigger than I expected too.

It was really nice to be able to meet up with some people I have only known from the forum. Always good to put a face with a name.

So I just wanted to say an enormous big thank you to Rod and Leonie for the terrific effort they put in. I enjoyed the afternoon immensely.

    Greg

    Thanks Greg,
I enjoyed the day also and you and Sally are always welcome if you are over this way. Glad you got some good weather while you were here. I'll pass on your thanks to Leonie.

We had a good little gathering and there were four CNC machines and some different displays than you would normally find at a CNC gathering. I think Les stole the show with his CNC EDM projects and three of the group have gone away planning to build a EDM machine.
We had several plastic molding demonstrations from Bones our robot man and we ran a couple of jobs on two of the machines. We also had a slide show which included machine builds, a huge horizontal boring machine, some very impressive commercial machines and even a Formula 500 racing car.
Thanks to all for coming along and bringing all your bits and pieces.
    Cheers,
    Rod

I was very envious of a gathering at Rod's place and would loved to be there.

I only have one small question ... what is an EDM machine and how does one become one??

    Cheers,

    Alan

    Hi Alan,
    Always welcome to drop by.
EDM is one of those electrickery things - it is a CNC machine but instead of a cutter it uses a very fine wire and current is passed through the wire. Think of a hot wire cutter of sorts. The electrickery erodes the metal so you end up with a really fine and accurate cut. It does not matter if the material is 1mm thick or 300mm thick it still does it thing. Les had a 75mm (I think) ball bearing which he had cut the centre out in a pattern. Really amazing use of technology and great for gear cutting, etc. Apparently you can make these machines but Les had a commercial machine that is made in Japan.
    Cheers,
    Rod

Well Rod it seems you are the BBQ king and i'll be more than happy to fly over if you decide to host another gathering. Sounds like you had some really nice toys to ogle over.

Now, where are the pics. Stop holding out on us!!

    Hi Mike,
It was more of a gathering of like minded people and nothing like your Melbourne events. There were a dozen of us including partners and I think it worked well with a small group. I have a small yard and with less than a week to get it together it wasn't advertised.
I saw a few cameras on the day but I think photos were being taken of machines and things only.
    Cheers,
    Rod

    Now now Rod,

Don't sell yourself short. A gathering is a gathering and there was smoke and meat involved.
    ITS WAS A CNC BBQ!

Now, if you want to deprive me of a reason to fly half way across the country to see Perth, which i've been trying to see for a while now, thats a different story.

    /M

    Hi Mike,
There is always room for a fellow CNC'er on this side of the continent.
    Cheers,
    Rod

    Hi Rod

Been having some troubles with the computer and didn't pick up this thread until now.

As one of the attendees at your BBQ, I would like to echo Greg's remarks. It was a great day. Thanks Rod and Leonie.

Your guests were a really good bunch of people with a host of different skills and experiences to share. One can't help but learn something from a group like that.

I enjoyed it immensely and picked up on a number of things I didn't know before.

    You're right Greg. Isn't Morphy a beauty.

    Cheers
    Geoff
