i also want to be able to use it as a doming machine),only when the z axis starts to move down and stop when the z axis starts to move up , can somebody please help with the mach 3 setup i have been playing around with this for a while lots of dead ends and haven't got very far

Firstly the low power diodes are really useless to do most things, slow and you WILL end up replacing it, however if it is the way to go, then there are ways of setting up a digital trigger (setup through config>Ports and pins). You can setup a proper digital triggers or you can cheat and under motor outputs set step pin to zero and the direction pin to the terminal to the trigger of the laser.
The doming machine can be as simple, however most doming machines are run with a small controller of their own or setup with a small routine under the control as most doming machines will trigger and expell the liquid and at the end of the desired amount, will "snap" the flow by reversing the direction quickly (thus forcing the liquid back into the tube to prevent drips or snail trails. EDIT: Some machines rely on the viscosity of the epoxy or similar to stops drips but the top end machines make sure of it.
For arguments sake, the proper CO2 laser tubes/power supplies are also easy to run under mach 3 as the power supplies usually have a PWM input and mach 3 does have a laser pwm output option.
