    Default Repairs to diy router

Hi, thought i would document this repair in case someone might find it useful. I was asked to "fix" a guy's cnc router, he used it initially a lot when he bought it but it had issues.

So i started on the electrical, they fitted the HY drive on the machine frame just in the open air. This for me is a big no no....these drives do not have an adequate ip rating. It was filled with saw dust. Also the cable from the drive to the motor was not a mains rated cable, they used a microphone screened cable similar to what jaycar sells....around 0.25mm sq on the 2.2 Kw water cooled spindle. The spindle motor was also not earthed, needless to say he had electrical noise issues.

I made up a new control panel, at this point we might add another drive for a rotary axis....so the panel layout will most likely change. Also the hy drive will most likely go and also the 2.2Kw water cooled spindle.

The G540 will stay, a additional drive will be required for the rotary axis. The new panel have passed the noise test, however it will be changed...

Even though the water cooled spindle is now earthed we decided not to use it anymore...

Thanks for the report and pics, Erick. Love the 4th axis lathe, what size chuck is that on there?

Hi Kryn....honestly i am not sure, had a quick look at it and decided not to work on it. It will never be any good/accurate.

Some parts arrived so i replaced y axis bearings...lined up the axis and started drilling holes to mount the new ball screws.

So the y-axis is assembled and calibrated. When i moved on to the x-axis i found the mounting plate holes were not done properly. I did not plan to redo this plate but i really don't like the misalignment.

Eric, I have found that the mounting holes on the linear rail bearings that I have are not accurately positioned and vary quite a bit. There is a video somewhere on YT discussing the positioning and the holes being not central to the axis but off to one side. This is my first rodeo with this stuff and I was very surprised to see the differences in position and Mike found the same thing but did not realise why when he drilled the holes to attach plates/mounts to the bearing blocks he was way out with the holes not matching. I had to be careful and mark a "face side" and it was still a problem even doing that.

Chris...thanks for the tip, I usually confirm dimensions etc before i machine the plates. The linear bearing blocks i bought are of a better quality than some of the online stuff.

Anyway i really appreciate the info....
