Slate???
Hi Guys
went up to our local slate quarry today to get some slate for a new path. While up there, got talking to the owner who gave me a couple of 'smooth;\' plates of slate to play with.
Cut out a plate with the name of the quarry, using a 4mm ball-nose cutter.
turned out quite good and the quarry owner was impressed - however - burnt out the cutter.
Question: has anyone cut slate yet, and if so, what type of cutters did you use???
I have 'googled' for diamong bits etc, but with little luck so far.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated as I can see a very nice little niche here, as there is an almost infinite amount of slate available locally.
Cheers
Noel

Thinking of making tombstones.
IMO I would not cut stone of any description on my machine. The grit will get into the ballscrews and linear rails and wear them out rapidly. Diamond dragging would be OK and have a look at Greolts thread on that.
The usual machine for cutting marble and stone is a waterproof spindle and lots of water on the job. Another method is to cut under water by placing a tub on the table. These machines have totally encolsed screws and rails.
Cutting dry exposes you to some unpleasant dust problems.Cheers,
Rod
