    Default Smoking Spindle

I think I have stuffed my spindle. I turned it on today after I played with the VFD putting it back to factory setting, then there was smoke and the smell came with it. Can anyone give me a few hints on how to take the spindle apart to see if I can fix it.
    Thanks David

Factory settings WILL stuff your spindle. They are NOT correct for our power supplies and requirements.

PS Let us know how you get on with it, because I may have stuffed my spindle too, but for a different reason. I'm just interested in their repairability.

    Hi,

You may find that the spindle is still OK assuming you turned it off as soon as you saw the smoke.

Try putting the settings back to where they should be and see if it is OK.

    Cheers,

    Peter.

I let some of the smoke escape from my, when I first attempted to set it up. However, I managed to get the settings correct and all was good. I might have been just plain lucky though.

Well I went back and reset all setting back to the book settings. It did start and went slow and didn't sound right so I was just about to turn it of when the VFD shut down and came up with a fault code of short circuit. Today I pulled it apart and all I can say is not happy. Well thats $220.00 down the drain.

It would appear that too much smoke escaped. Hard luck.

On a minusculy plus side, you now have a spare pair of bearings.

Got my new spindle today did one more check on the VFD all setting as per book. Ran the VFD without the spindle for a bit no problems, checked voltage to spindle around 90VAC on all 3 phases'. Ran up the spindle for about 40sec got hot so I stopped it and it let out some smoke again not much this time. I now think the problem maybe the VFD or is the voltage to high it stays at 90VAC until it stops the max frequency is 50HZ. Any ideas?

Which book did you use to set the VFD to?

Bob I used the book that came with the VFD but I don't know if the setting were the same before I played with it.

    Hi David
If it is an air cooled spindle then your lower frequency PD 011 is probably set too low. It should be 120 (bit of a safety margin) as 50 is way too low. The air coooled spindles need to run at 100 htz minimum or the fan doesn't work well enough and they over heat.
There are a number of other parameters that should be checked so can you bring the VFD and spindle up and we can bench test it.
These things are usually confusing first time around.
    Cheers,
    Rod

    Thanks for that Bob.
Well the new spindle still works. Spent some quality time with Rod last night. Rod did a factory reset on my VFD and I must say the book settings are way off, she runs like a dream now thanks to Rod. Thanks for a good night Rod you did teach me some good stuff.
