Something different
My son got me a 3D printer for my birthday.
While it's frame is made out of laser cut ply it of course does not make things out of wood but plastic.
But it is computer controlled and looks like it will be a lot of fun.
We have the big brother of this one at work and it is used full time to make prototype and one of a kind type stuff.
One interesting thing about the version that I have is that it comes in the form of a kit that you have to assemble making it a great father/son project.
The only thing that has to be sourced elsewhere is a glass platen on which the plastic build takes place.
Here is what the kit looks like - its the Printrbot LC
We had worked on it for about an hour to get to this point.
Lots of leetle bits and pieces.
This one has a 150 x 150 mm platen and only one colour plastic at a time can be printed.
The one we have at work is 2 colour and has a 200 x 150 mm working surface.

Oh gawd. That's all you need...something else to make extremely cool things. With all the nifty odd things you come up with I'm pretty sure you work for Batman. I might have to start calling you Lucius Fox
That's a great gift and the time you'll spend putting it together with the lad is an even better pressie. Happy birthday for whenever it was/is
