Default Source for precision rod in Aus

    Hi,
I got some 20mm dia sliding bearing carriages on eBay.
4pcs SC20UU linear ball bearing CNC Router XYZ Table on eBay (end time 04-Feb-10 21:51:17 GMT)

And am now on the hunt for a supplier of the rods they will run on..
Anyone got any cheap sources.. This is my first cnc router so I'll learn from it then use it to build a Joe 4x4 Hybrid.. thats the plan anyway.

It is not difficult to find any bearing supplier will have, finding a cheap source is another matter, I think the last lot I purchased was around $30 pm

A number of people here have used this eBay seller for linear motion products.
They stock SBR20 supported rails, just ask them if you don't see it listed.

Contact a local Metal land or One Steel.

They can supply you with 20mm diameter Hardened Precision Steel Rod, I'm not certain on their prices but $30/mtr sounds about right.

For the benefit of other in the Eastern Suburbs of Melb my local steel merchant has the following options..

Can anyone comment on whether the bright mild will have a suitable finish and tolerance to be acceptable? I'll be going with the 304 SS anyway.

20mm Bright Solid Round (1020 grade) $8.95+gst per metre ($0.75+gst per
    cut)
20mm Stainless Solid Round (304 garde) $24.25+gst per metre ($2.00+gst per
    slow cut)
20mm Stainless Solid Round (316/Marine grade) $32.90+gst per metre ($2.00+gst per slow
    cut)

The mild steel will not have the hardness so best to go with SS.

    You'll keep Gary.
    Cheers,
