I have now ordered a 800wt air cooled, and vfd, from Linearmotionbearings, at a cost of US$395 delivered. Quite a happy chappy.

Well done Chris - good purchase!
Does anyone know if this one (or the 2.2kw) could take a 1/2 inch ball nose cutter?
thanks, Jason

Hi Jason,
You need an ER20 to hold a half inch cutter.
The 800 watt comes with a ER11 so no good there. It looks like the 2.2kw is the go for ER20 collets but check first with the seller. You don't always get what the listing says so make it a condition of sale.Cheers,
Rod

thanks Rod, I thought that may be the case. I will have to re-assess the weight of the 2.2kw and my machines ability to carry it ... thanks again, jb

Nice price Chris especially with the Aussie dollar at the moment!
Jason - I think the 800 is a ER11 collet, i believe they can take 1/4 inch bit
The 2.2kw unit (same one i bought) takes a ER20 which can take a 1/2 bit
Cheers

Thanks Glenn, makes sense... I should have picked up on that - This obviously means the Air cooled and water cooled use the same form factor... thanks, jb

Collet Size
Hello Chris
Sorry for jumping in so late here, there was mention of ER 11 & ER 20 collets earlier, you may be aware of this but if not, ER11 collects will only allow 1/4" shanks or smaller to be used, if you want to use 1/2' shanked bits you will need to go with a bigger ER 20 collet.
FYI, I have used linearbearings but only for linear bearings, Chai was easy to deal with but I'm guessing the other busness is too.
BTW, I have one of each and there isn't really ( both water cooled ) any difference, both are quiet, reliable and so much better than a router, CNC4PC also make a card ( C11, I think ) that will control the spindle from M3.
Hope this helps

Thanks Ed, I am aware of the collet resrictions, and only have the intent of using 1/4 and 1/8 bits. I'll have a look at the C11, thank you.

My confidence in the Chinese VFD that came with my spindle is pretty low. Over on CNC Zone there are a few reports of parts letting magic smoke out.
With the dollar so good perhaps I should just get a Hitachi VFD
I found this one on Ebay that suits my spindle - it even has a full manual in English!!!

That same seller has a website and it is cheaper on there,
http://www.driveswarehouse.com/Drive...0-015NFU1.html
See which deal has better freight. Ebay add says free freight but that will only be to US customers.
I bought mine from them.

John,
That one on the ebay listing is only good for 360htz. To get full 24,000 RPM you need the 400htz. Someone correct me if I am wrong.Cheers,
Rod

I think it is a typo. On the website it says 400hz
Definitely worth checking but as far as I know that whole series are all 400hz
