Spoilboard Surfacing
Hi all,
Struggling to find reasonable speeds and feeds for my surfacing bit without seeming to over heat it.
Bit is 50.8mm diameter
I'm taking 0.5mm pass depth with chip load of 0.5mm ( seems about the most common value of various charts )
Wondering what experience people have had with speeds/feeds combination to result in 0.5mm chip load.
My machine ( 1325W Woodworking CNC router (signstech.com) ) is quite capable, so that won't be a limitation for me.
- Spindle RPM up to 24,000
- Spindle HP is 7.5kw
- Feed rate up to 20,000 mm per minute
Thoughts?
David

I started off with a generic torquata 50mm surfacing bit, and always seemed to get some burning. Problem with those cheaper bits is they usually don't come with any cutting data. I'm not experienced enough to do much without some sort of starting point.
Changed to an amana tool RC2255, which has a pdf download of recommended feeds and speeds. MDF is 14,000rpm / 12700mm/min / 0.3mm chipload. It's a 63.5mm carbide insert bit, so I'm not sure whether those numbers would translate to other bits. I was a bit scared of that surface speed, so ran it at half without any issues (I have a 3HP machine).

Thanks mate - I'll start from there.
I have also purchased a new bit whereby the carbide faces are at the edge of the tool not all the way across the centre.
At least that should eliminate rubbing/heat from the equation.

Used to run a Biesse Rover 24 with one of these 4 Flute - Surface Planer - Carbitool
10-12k rpm, I think 10-12m/min feed; it's been a while since I was there.
