Suppliers of small quantites of thick Aluminium plate
G'day,
Can anyone point me at a (preferably local to Melbourne) supplier who would be willing to supply small quantities (about 2sqm) of 15-25mm thick Aluminium? I've not had much luck asking around, seems that thickness is relegated to the larger suppliers and they aren't much interested in small-time customers like me
[Also posted this in metalworking before I noticed this dedicated CNC forum - this is for a CNC design]
TIA,
-- Chris

I have purchased off cuts of 25mm aluminium plate at Capral, so I assume they cut to size.They certainly cut to size in rod etc.

Capral is definitely the go.

I don't think there is any other supplier as Capral have bought them all up. Smart ali is now Capral, etc.
I bought small amounts from them, just give them a business name (make it up) and they tend to help you more than a bloke off the street.

Just came across this site which has a lot of good links.
One of these links should be right to supply you the stuff you want - maybe the surplus online store?

If your looking for cheap (almost always scratched up) try recyclers I got a large plate 25mm from the recyclers awhile ago, but the thing is you have to be there at the right time as my local recyclers empties out the aluminium bin daily, most likely to get compressed into an aluminium block
Aluminium Extrusions, Sheet, Plate & Rollformed Aluminium, Castings, Fasteners and more from Ullrich Aluminium - Bought some offcuts from them 12mm plate never asked about the larger stuff but I gather they will have it.
{EDIT}
Would be good to get some competition with the aluminium its farken expensive.

"BTW wasn't it the other way around capral bought out smart aluminium."
I'm believe thats what I said.
PS: Those stepper motors I bought off of you for the G540 work a treat. They don't even mind running for 4 hours screaming their tits off.

Hi,
I went to Capral Dandenong at;
91A Cheltenham Road DANDENONG VIC 3175 Australia( 3 9791 1211)
I was after a 20mm plate sized 24"x18". It was no problem except that they need a few days to cut it.
Cheers,
Peter.

What sort of prices would you pay for 20mm or 25mm aluminium plate?
Up to date, I've gotten by with offcuts from offcuts_galore on eBay or Oztion but might need to get some thicker/larger stuff soon and want to do some budgeting first.
Slightly off topic, sorry.Geoff

Thanks all for your replies - I'll let you know what I end up doing and how much it costs
Also if anyone's interested in picking the faults that are inevitably going to be in my first CNC design, once I've got the basic design finished I'll post it to the group before I start cutting anything ... I'd appreciate having some experienced eyes running over it.

I do happen to have a price for uncut plate (20 x 1200 x 2400mm), which is roughly $2100 inc GST. Not something I'm going to jump into right now, but if it happened to work out a lot cheaper than buying it bit by bit from e.g. Capral and there was enough interest from others here it might be worth getting in a plate and cutting it up.
What experience do others here have with pricing from Capral?

Don't take an offcut unless it is the exact size you need. You are charged the going rate for the size of the offcut so there is no benefit in paying for material you will cut or machine off.
Cheers,
Rod

I got a price from Ullrich a month or so a go for 2400 x 1200 x 16 of 5083 (Marine Grade) aluminium - $1,009 + GST. Freight within Victoria was an extra $45. If I recall correctly the sheet weighed about 125 kg so it was about $8.20 per kg. Most of the other prices I have gotten from Ullrich work out about $8 to $9 per kg so perhaps that is a useful guide.
When speaking to the local recycle guy today he said that the price for aluminium had gone up since Christmas - they were now paying $0.80 per kg for scrap aluminium! I am assuming that is for aluminium cans and I am not sure whether other types of aluminium have a different price (it strikes me that cans are a pretty messy way to get scrap aluminum but it may not make any difference).
