    Default Having issues with a PMDX107 and my VFD

    Gents,

    I have had my VFD running well for over 2 years now (thanks to this thread), and I decided I was going to add automatic control to it with a PMDX 107. Hooked everything up, changed PD001 to 1 and PD002 to 1 to get control from the 107 and not the front keypad.

    When I initiate the test sequence from the 107, the spindle turns on in the correct direction, however the rpm is always 7200 rpm, no matter the VDC the 107 is sending it. In initial test mode, the 107 sends 10.33VDC to the spindle, and if you hit the test button again it is supposed to go to 30%, which it sends 3.4VDC, all confirmed with a Fluke meter.

    There has to be a parameter in the VFD that I am missing somewhere, I was hoping one of you gurus could help me out

    Does an internal jumper exist on your inverter which selects between
    an internal (perhaps depopulated) potentiometer and the external
    analog Voltage Input?

    Yes, there is a jumper. It is currently set to VI. When I move it to VR, the spindle will not start up. Also verified wiring going to the correct connectors and the voltages being correct as well.

    The spindle starts up and goes to whatever setting is in PD011, which right now is 150 or 9000 rpms.

    I went back out at lunch and did a factory reset of the VFD and then reinput all of my parameters into it.

    Once I did that, started the PMDX testing sequence again, and everything worked perfectly. Now onto getting Mach to work with it. I will tackle that one tonight I guess.

    Thanks for the help. I don't know what the problem was or what it was looking for, but everything is happy at the current moment.

    Back again for some more help from the experts.

    I have everything hooked up and working from Mach, but now I am fighting torque and horsepower issues while cutting.

    I have a 4kw, 5hp air-cooled spindle

    Running a new MLCS Katana .5” upcut bit at 12000 rpm, .375” depth of cut, 200ipm

    Amperage at no load is 0.3 amps

    As the spindle started into the cut, the amperage increase at a rate of about 1 amp per second before the bit was stopped at 6.8 amps (max amperage on the spindle is 15 amps)

    So it looks like the VFD is not sending enough amperage fast enough to get the spindle up to the appropriate horsepower before it bogs down.

    Is there a parameter to change the amperage ramp time so that it does not bog down? I don't feel that running this bit at 15000 rpm would be safe, or I would try adjusting the speed up to see if that would help compensate.

    Appreciate your thoughts and time.

    The reason there is no load at the beginning of the cut is the fact that I had already tried cutting some of this material when the spindle bogged down, and I was just showing this as an example of what is happening.

    The more I watch the video the more I think the spindle is going in the wrong direction

    Thanks for your time Warrick. If you look closely, the spindle is going in the clockwise direction when it starts up, which is with the direction of the cutter.

    Just wondering but if it's an up-cut bit shouldn't the spiral be going up? It's going down like a down-cut spiral bit.

    That's what is what I was getting at, if it is an up cut spiral it is going in the wrong direction.
    Can you take the bit out and show a photo of the base and side of the bit ?

    Apologies, you are correct, it is a downcut bit. I grabbed the wrong one when I was in a hurry to get the video taken.

    All the parameters are the same for the bit, even brand and condition, except for it is a downcut.

    Hi swaggs21,

    Since you have previously done a reset on the FVD, have you checked that the current limit is now set correctly?

    Also have you tried feeding at 100 inch/min to see what the current load is?

    Jayson,

    I have checked all of the parameters dealing with max current, etc. and they seem to be right. I can make this work successfully at a .125 depth of cut at 200ipm, so I would venture to say that at 100ipm, this cut would be successful as well. I may have some time late this evening to try things out.

    Default Can I mount the VFD here?

    Just a quick question. I currently have a VFD under my table at the rear. Is it possible / practical to mount it close to the spindle on the Z axis plate.. See picture below.

    How would VFD units handle the movements of the Z axis? Would it help me reduce any noise produced along the shielded cable by keeping the cable short?

    I do not believe it would pose an issue to the operation of the unit in the short term.

    It's a practical issue if anything, as you suggest, you still need a choke on the cable (stray RF) and is it reachable during operation, especially if you have to push the emerg stop.
    If its going up and down, this would be difficult

    The other issue may be harmonics induced by the cuts travelling into the electronics could pose longer term problems. You have to route power up to it too.
    I would suggest mounting it closer to the front where you can reach it or use M3/M5 commands via a relay to start and stop, with speed control via a PWM-DC output unit like Peter Hommand DG-03 or 05. I did this and the unit is now tucked away towards the rear out of harms way and stray swarf/dust
