The truth and nothing but the truth
G'day all as the title says, the truth and nothing but the truth. I've roamed the forums on the internet for the answer and all are different. My question is, what to use, rack and pinion, lead screw or the most expencive, ballscrew. I know ballscrew is good but you need Bill Gates pockets to pay for them. So that leaves rack and pinion and lead screw. A lot of forums say rack and pinion is not good for accuracy but good for speed but wears out easier. Lead screw has problems with whipping and backlash but better for accuracy but slower. So what the hell is the truth, please help me out.

Hi Ted,
Depends on the size of your build as to whether the cost prohibits using Ballscrews.
For me you cannot beat ballscrews and square lineal rails.
cheers,

Linear rails are available in Brisbane from SES Linear Bearings and also from eBay.
Supported rails are slightly cheaper and also available at the same places.
Ball screws will have to come from China if they are to be affordable. Many of the forum members use Solar JeanBob Willson
The term 'grammar nazi' was invented to make people, who don't know their grammar, feel OK about being uneducated.

I've built with ballscrews, rack and pinion and belts.
Depends what you are building. Is this a router for wood and plastics? I would not hesitate, rack and pinion on X and Y for me every time.
I remember attending a large engineering show that they have in Sydney or Melbourne every year.
I went around and looked at every computer controlled machine there similar in operation to a router (there were lots)
Plasmas, water jets, routers, punches. All BIG dollar machines. Every one with the exception of one Thermwood router was rack and pinion.
Most people I talk to, building or using similar machines who talk down rack and pinion, have never actually used it.
Again, this all depends on what you are building. A wood router say 900 x 1200 and up, can't go past R & P IMO.
I am with Kym on the square linear rails.
