    More stuff.

levelled the waste board today, almost 1.5mm difference in height across the board.
Squared the spindle ok, still needs fine tuning but not too bad, certainly usable.

anyone have a lathe to turn a 12mm rod to 6mm for about half its length? Rod is 100mm long

Still need to work out my new level probe, but I can make stuff again. Projects incoming.

I caught up with Andrew on Sunday via FaceTime. He gave me a run through his setup and CNC unit.
    A brilliant fold-away set-up.
Thanks Andrew - very much appreciated

Found an unusual issue, well two in the end.

A wood chip got stuck in my z axis lead screw and jammed it up good and proper. Never had that before. A teardown and clean fixed it with no lasting damage.

Then i started to lose steps on the Y axis, turns out one of the adjustable eccentric nuts had vibrated loose and fell off. I essentially lost a V wheel and half my machine kept skipping teeth on the belt.
Lost the nut so had to order new ones, $2.80 each but easy to order and Ben answered his phone on a Sunday and posted that day so his service is great.

Bought some threadlocker same day to fix the problem.

    A short update.

had reason to check my calibration the other day for reasons best left unsaid.

the default was 40 steps per mm.
Had to adjust to 39.92 steps per mm to get the correct movement. Was 1mm out over half a meter otherwise.

Is that error caused by belt stretch?

No, my own failure to calibrate carefully on initial setup. 0.02 in 40 was small enough that I didn't notice on the earlier tests with small movements. Only became apparent when I cut a couple of holes 675mm apart and found them to be 678mm instead.

Another small development. After using the spindle for a while it started to generate some noise and was getting quite loud. Ben at XYZ carve spent some time with me to troubleshoot. Is not a bearing issue and turned out to be an EMF noise issue that we addressed by increasing the switching speed of the VF drive. Was provided with step by step instructions on how to do this and worked a treat.

Downside is the potential for interference which I also learned manifests most commonly as false triggers in limit switches.

Ben isn't so good with responses to email but has been exemplary on the phone.

I tried multiple times to get an online quote but was thwarted each time by a “lack of stock” message. Tried ringing him, no answer. Left a message - no reply; filled in the online Contact firm - no reply.
Haven’t bothered to try again as website still shows no stock.
