    Default Harvey HW110LGE-30

After much research I finally took the plunge and purchase my new Cabinet saw - Harvey HW110LGE-30

    Attachment 300518
    https://www.woodworkforums.com/f153/2...arison-180559/

Wow, What a nice saw!!! Detailed Specs Below.

Picked the saw up on Saturday from Ryan at Major Woodworking Equipment (MWE). It was my first visit to MWE but won't be my last as the customer service has been great

The first question I hear you ask is why didn't I go for the 50" version? Unfortunately space is a massive restriction in my tiny ManCave. Ryan (MWE) said that if I ever had the space down the road then it should only be a couple of hundred to upgrade (~$100 more T time of purchase) That's a nice upgrade to have up my sleeve.

The majority of the saw comes on a crate with a very solid cardboard box wrapped around it. There is also separate boxes for the rails and fence.

    Attachment 300517

My box had no signs of damaged whatsoever however unfortunately the motor cover had a few minor dings. Not to worry Ryan at MWE said, I will put the one on the shop floor aside and you can swap it over.

    Attachment 300519

This bad boy is heavy. At 250Kg's it is heavier then most in its class. The first challenge was getting it down 20 stairs to the ManCave. The heaviest piece is about 190Kg's which ended up. Being surprising easy to get down the stairs with three blokes and a stair walker.

Assembling the saw was surprising easy however do not expect any great guidance form the supplied instruction manual as it is next to useless. You could put it all together yourself however it will probably be about 5 times faster with assistance. Assembly requires putting the wings on , then the rails, then the power switch, extension table, fence and then removed the shipping lock before finally installing the bladed (supplied). Not too hard at all.

If you are going to install on a mobile base I would suggests doing this before doing any of the assembly. With three blokes putting the main machine in the base was the hardest part. At the bottom of the machine is a small black cosmetic strip. This is just a piece of tape which is very easily damaged when installing in the base so you will need to be extra careful and make sure the base is sufficiently wide if you don't want to damage this.

The mobile base Ryan from MWE recommended for the saw is fantastic. Full assembled in under a minute and it moves the 250Kg unit around on my plywood floor easily. The other light bases I have take about 40-60 mins to install so this was a nice surprise.

At $1885 inc. GST the saw offers exception value. The unit is heavy and that translates into a feeling of quality. The main table is solid and with a touch of Inox almost has a mirror like appearance.

The wheels for raising the blade and tilting are very solid and the whole thing as a very nice action and feel about it

The unit comes with two Riving knives (rise and fall) that are quick release allowing change over in a few seconds. The larger of them has a clear Perspex blade guard with above table dust extraction capabilities. The guard can be removed fairly easily however I intend on leaving permanently attached and will just swap the riving knife over if required.

Harvey include a full set of Allen keys in a handy holder and all the wrenches you need to make blade changes etc.

A nice looking and solid Mitre gauge with aluminum fence and stop is included however I have not used this as I have an Incra HD from my old table I will continue to use

    Dado insert came standard

The 4" dust port is on a steel plate that is removable and modifiable and the cabinet internals slope toward the dust port to assist with dust extraction

You may need to wire your shed with a 15AMP circuit as the unit comes with a 15AMP plug as the 3HP motor draws 12.8 AMPs on startup

Out of the box the blade measured 9/1000 of an inch out of alignment from front to back and in terms of 90degree vertical stop I don't own anything accurate enough to measure any error here.

The fence is just lovely. Very heavy and very solid however it just slides across the rails with ease. Tuning and adjusting is done effortlessly. It locks hard against the rails and requires considerable force to see any movement. The added CE component adds a nice level of additional safety for reducing kick back.

The he unit comes with a number of optional accessories which include a routing table, sliding table, 50" rails etc. As I have a Triton router which allows for above table adjustments I intend on installing my router in the extension table provided. That is a nice (free) addition .

    Dislikes (Minor only)
    - 1 Year Warranty. There is not really much that can go wrong with the saw and as it has A well respected 3HP Leeson motor time will only tell if this is an issue.
    - the black tape (cosmetic) is easily damaged. (I had the same complaint about a Jet Jointer I recently purchased)
    - The locking screw for the motor cover would be better being a knob rather then screw.

Finally the test: I haven't had a chance to use extensively so will provide an update in a few weeks/months time however first impressions are great. The Leeson motor spins the blade up to 4000+ RPM quickly. It is surprisingly quiet. The extra blade speed translates in a much nicer (and quieter??????) cut. I put a couple of pieces of 90mm pine though it and it cut it like butter. The finished cut was impressive. And boy of boy do I love that fence.

One very happy camper. The ManCave feels complete with this new addition. Now I just need to work out how to pay off the credit card

Thanks for the review......comprehensive and will help others.....particularly your comparison chart.....like it.

one thing did you apply a long straight edge onto the table top? Is it dead on flat?

    cheers

Very nice saw - and certainly the Harvey gear looks much better value for money than JET. Not sure how the Harvey (MWE) and Laguna (Gregorys) prices compare for almost identical machines - I guess it depends which is nearer, as interstate freight is a consideration.

Hi great review. I was wondering, what is the distance from the tip of the blade to the front of the table is? my table saw is quite small and it makes using sleds very unsafe and awkward

I just got to brag, I just ordered the Harvey. Major said they have 15 back orders and a 4-5 week delay on shipping. I'll set it up and report back when it arrives for a mini review. I plan to take this to my new shed in Tasmania.

Like superbunny, I have one of these bad boys on order... (thanks for the good review BTW, Damienol)
I'm not looking to buy a couple of blades while waiting for it to arrive. You mention that the arbor size is 16mm standard, but 30mm as supplied by MWE. Can you confirm that this means it is supplied in Australia to only accept 30mm ID blades, or does it come for 16mm (5/8") and an adapter for 30mm? The blades I have been looking at are 5/8"...

Well I got mine during the week and thanks to Ryan for his help on the delivery problem I had but I got now so all OK. I have it all assembled and done some trial cuts and I have to say I'm realy pleased I purchased this table saw. As you will see by the photos there is nothing to do after basic setup, it was all set above factory specks as stated in the manual only 0.08 out on the blade alignment and 0.01 on the 90 and 45 degree blade stops. I think this Harvey machine is easily as good as the Laguna equivelent I inspected at the TWWW show and I had a very detailed look around the Laguna as it was my pick at the time. The Hervey I believe is just as well made and I expect it to last me for my days left and I'm taking it to Tasmania next year when I move. The cut with the supplied blade was a top cut on pine and I was not expecting such a good end grain cut finish. I fact it was so good I'm not going to put on the new fancy blade I have for it.

You can see it's well packaged and comes with a set of tools to help with assembley and blade change etc. It does run very quite but that was no surprise from other accounts. The arbor is 30mm and I wish it was 25mm as I have a heap of new blades that will not fit it. I'm putting on my Incra TS LS fence sytem with the Jessem Precision Stock Guides, so I will have a good setup. The table was very flat and polished and a joy to line up and setup. I think the manual may have been improved as I had no problems following it for the setup process. I know the price is now $1995 but with the feel of quality in the solid build I think it offers very good value for the money. I'm going to reccomend you get it if your in the market for a new table saw with a limited budget and I believe you wont go wrong.

    Default Jealous!

Congratulations on the new baby, Superbunny

10 months of procrastinating and I still haven't ordered one for myself
I've got a literal baby on the way now so I'll just keep on putting it off for a while longer...

How much space do you have/need for it?
The space I'll end up using is 5mx6m and I'm worried it'll be a little cramped once I add in benches and tools around the edge.

    Cheers,
    FrankyG

I received my HW110LGE-30 a week ago also.
I can only echo the positive comments from all above. The whole package feels of high quality and the saw runs beautifully. Having not had a "proper" tablesaw before (MK3 Triton), setup took me quite a while. I couldn't get the fence to keep position solidly during a rip cut, but after getting my head around the setup and adjustment of a biesemeyer-style fence, it is now smooth running and then rock solid when locked in position. The finish is very nice and polished top seems nice and flat - at least as good as I can tell from my straight-edge. I didn't need to shim the wings. The supplied mitre gauge is quite nice with good size and useful alum. extrusion, and better than I had seen from similar cost saws at Carbatec and at the Melbourne WWW show, but I would still love an Incra at some stage.
I got mine from Roy at Get Woodworking in Melbourne - nice guy and would definitely recommend him for Melbournians.
The 30mm arbor is very substantial and seems like a better engineered solution than 5/8" for the amount of power, but its a minor annoyance that there are fewer options for sourcing blades. I am still using the supplied blade which has worked well for the small amount of hardwood, ply and melamine that I have cut so far.

Default I took the plunge too!

Hi Guys, I'm kinda new around here, but I have been hearing(well reading really) what you have been saying.
I have been reading like the B'crikeys trying to determine the best machine for me.
I have been and, i suppose still am a bit of a Carbatec/Jet fan for a while now, but decided, after listening to you guys, that I should consider other brands.
Well, I contacted Roy at "Get Woodworking" and found that he had a Harvey in stock.
Not the one I wanted, but at least I could see what all your fuss was about.
    Immediately impressed!
Good quality ground surfaces. Although The wings were not finished as finely as the main table, but very good none the less.
It appeared to be well finished and well thought out.
Mind you, a tad heavy at over 250Kg., but what can ya do!
They were out of stock but a shipment has just hit the water out of China, so late January or more likely February some time.
I will be out of town for some of that so I hoping to take delivery in early march.
I go the base model HARVEY HW110HB-30.
At this stage I did not get any extras (will get an 80 tooth blade) and probably get a add set a bit later.
I don't know how the standard fence performs either, but hoping it will be Ok!

Now I had never met Roy, or in fact until yesterday I had not even heard of "Get Woodworking" but I liked the way he done business.
NOT pushy at all...too happy to make phone calls to check a few things for me(availability, price(new shipment, AUS$ etc.).
(not make guesses, like some I have come across over the years).
    Knowledgable about his products.
And I felt under no pressure to "buy or get out". He was happy to talk about all things wood and machine.

I'm very confident about the decision I have made.
And a lot of that had to do with you guys at Woodworkforums...thanks guys.
    Have a great Christmas Regards

    Peter

Peter, if you don't like it I'll eat my hat, I'm still in love with mine and just got the Incra fence on so will post a picture later but I hear no one is disappointed with the standard fence anyhow.

Hi Peter, congratulations on the purchase. I found Roy to be exactly as you describe also. I think he had the dovetail version on display in the shop, which is visually identical to the HW110LGE.
I'm also in Eltham North (seems to be a hot pocket for Get Woodworking this month!) if you need a hand putting it together or want to see a HW110LGE in action, although I'm still learning how to use it myself.

Hi Binary01, I note in your message(is that what they are?) that you specifically mention 30mm arbor. The base model that I ordered is 5/8" which for me is very disappointing. Are you sure it is 30mm?? Roy mentioned that all the machines that come here are the U.S. spec, which means 5/8".
When I first asked Roy he did tell me it was 30mm, but upon going to the Harvey website and looking up my model, it said 5/8". Roy later confirmed, with Sydney supplier that it is indeed 5/8". For me that is disappointing, it seem so P***y small.
    I'm starting to get confused.
    Any help/info would be useful.
