Thread: Late 90's / 00's Pine Bedroom Suite Light Surface Reno

I'm really a newbie at surface renoing. I bought this king bed suite off facebook as the wife doesn't want me spending time building a bed (as we just had twins) and I didn't want to buy solid wood new as it was ~8k for what we were looking for. My thoughts are that with 3 kids under 3, this suite will get a bit of wear and tear with the kids throwing and tapping toys against it while we try to sleep off their attempts to get us up haha. However, I'd like to make it semi presentable in the bedroom.

There are a couple of heat related marks, of which one may not come out. The majority of wear is just surface scratches from the previous owner of ~15 years, refer to photo 2 of the worst of the wear.

1. I have a preference not to sand it all back... so my thoughts are attacking the worn surfaces with 0000 wool with 70% teak and 30% polyurethane to attempt to blend in the surface worn sections, allow the teak to stain a redish / darker colour and have the poly help protect the surface.

2. My wife reckons, rough sand the surface and just prime and paint the whole thing. She thinks that the primer and paint will smooth out the surface enough. I'm not sure that it would leave enough of a smooth finish and I assume that 1. I'd have to remove all the coating before I could attempt to prime and paint and 2. I'm also not sure that I can get into all surfaces to remove the coating.

3. It's big box store pine furniture. What do you think may have been used to coat the surface to create this reddish look? Potentially, I sand around those areas or 0000 wool and recoat a few times with each time removing excess?
