    Default Rosewood desk repairs

This is the top of a rosewood desk I picked up with a section broken out. I have sanded the top and clamped together. I was thinking of gluing and then clamping for a few days. Then I was sand to get some dust and with the glue make some filled for the holes, gouges, and where some splinters must have been lost. Then after drying give a sand with 180 and 240 grit. I still am not sure what sort of protection to put on but was thinking Danish oil.

Any suggestions with the clamping so that I get it flat 1st go? Are there tricks to the sawdust and glue filler so than when I apply finish it blends?
At an inch thick I think this wood will forgive my first time mistakes.

A lot lighter than the last rosewood thing I worked on ("artdeco." desk in veneer) on chipboard - with damage to corners and elsewhere. Had to repair with veneer from the actual unit -under the drawer runners was handy and the bottom of one of the drawers was done with stained blackwood! One of the missing chrome nuts for the chrome legs was polished galvanised! heard later that the dealer got $8000 for it (want his customer base).
One trick with filling is to use some of the fine sanding dust mixed with whatever finish that you use on it. PVA for instance (while effective) tends to darken or just not look the same.
