Smile Suggestions for removing sticky varnish

We have a beautiful dining room suite with dresser and carver in solid wood. The varnish has become very sticky and as a result it looks unsightly. Everything sticks, inculding paper, dust and tablecloths. We don't really want to get rid of it as it is beautiful African wood which we brought with us when we moved to Australia. The humidity in Cairns definitely makes it worse. We were recommended to us solvent based cleaning fluid to remove silicone build up but this has not solved the problem I would be very grateful if anyone can help us.
