Wardrobe from SEQ (how to strip the reliefs)
Hi,
I picked this up in SEQ yesterday and was hopeful for some nice treasure under the terrible paint work. Found the wood shown below (not sure what it is, someone suggested Lauan.) I want to strip the carved reliefs and potential colour paint them. Can anyone give advice of the safest ways to remove the coating and prepare for new paint? Would like to see samples of what others have done. I don't have the missing mirror (I have the drawers and missing door piece) and since people don't seem interested in buying wardrobes like this these days I'm looking at breaking down to make smaller pieces of furniture.

For painting, i would try cleaning and coating with an etch primer followed by the top coat.

Etch on timber ?
Dulux advise the use on timber may cause damage to the fibres in the timber.

I would look at paint stripper options.

Paint stripper. The old formula that actually works, rather than the new environmentally friendly formula:
Just a moment...
I'd brush it on thick with a cheap paint brush and remove it with a stiff nylon brush. Remove the residue with metho-soaked rags if you're worried about water raising the grain. That's what I did on a gramophone I restored. Worked very well.
