Thanks Trevor. Yes, before I saw the patience you had with your Indian, I probably would have said the gear was OK. You have definitely raised the bar and given me at least a lot to think about when making items in the shed.

    Thanks

Made the new gear today - larger diameter and extra tooth. It meshes well. Designed gear differently - made it a "solid casting" not spoked as it is main drive gear and needs to withstand stresses ?? Photo shows new gear in mesh before painting, Photo also of gear comparison 20 tooth V 21 tooth - note size differential. I made up idler gear shaft. To ensure I drilled accurately I made up a drilling jig (turned out of aluminium). It worked pretty well. Secured boiler to chasis to make sure there was no movement when setting up gears. Last photo shows gears in mesh and idler shaft sitting in position. Now need to make up a securing bracket for the idler gear shaft connection to the boiler. Pretty happy with today's work.

Everything got pulled apart today. Made up main idler gear bracket. Then re-assembled. The gears aligned and are in mesh. Thank goodness. All lubrication points to pillow block wheel bearings are now secured. I don't think I will paint the retaining washers and bolts - I think they add a bit of contrast. What do others think ? I reckon I am about 1/3 through Peny- Darren now. I have to make the front of the loco and piston assembly, stack, steam system as well as tender, truck and tracks.

I ordered a plastic model kit of Stephenson's Rocket from the UK, which I will be able to scale up and make engineering drawings or the next project.

No work tomorrow looking after our 2 YO Grandson.

    Regards

    Trevor,

Thanks, Yes - happy so far, bit of drama with the gear mesh and alignment - fair bit of rework was required. What do you think about leaving the wheel bolts and washers unpainted ?

There's a bit of a rule of thumb when it comes to steam and steel.
If it's not bronze, brass or copper "Paint It"
But as always it's all down to the way you like it to look!

    Cheers mate.

    Hello,

I am working on the steam exhaust cylinder and need to bend 5/16 copper tube. Has anybody got any ideas on how to bend 90 degree with a small radius. I don't want to spend $40 - $60 on a pipe bender that is limited in sizes anyway. I made up a jig - just a groove in aluminium and bent around tis I the vyce. It does work without kinking but you need to make the bend at least 40mm radius an I would like tighter bends. Has anybody got any ideas please ? I have added some photos of what I did.

    Thanks

    Hi,
I would make sure it was annealed then fill it with sand , plug it then bend it round a former.

The traditional way would be to plug one end of the pipe, then pack with sand and plug the other end. You may have to use something finer than sand, due to the small bore of the pipe. Salt maybe?

That's a nice little setup you've already got going there Keith.
I'd suggest placing your jig in the vice with the grooved section above the jaws.
Maybe lower down on the jig flatten off two sides so it wont turn in the vice.
Heat the copper up and with some wielding gloves on draw it around the jig.
If you still have trouble pack the pipe with sand and crimp the ends over.
I've gotten way with it a few times myself.

    Cheers mate.
    Trev.

Since I last looked in the train is coming along just great Keith. Have you thought about using solid stock for the pipe work so that when you bend it it will not flatten on the bend, if you were doing live steam then you would have to use hollow stock.
