Piggy Bank
Hi All,
Continuing on kids Christmas presents. Decided on a Piggy Bank - might help kids save some money as well.
I wanted to have a Piggy Bank that had a screw base instead of a plug (which may fall out and get lost).
If you want to make one similar to mine - you will need -
110mm OD PVC Pipe
40mm PVC Female connector 1 1/2 inch BSP thread
1 1/2 inch BSP PVC Plug
19mm thick pine
Cut a piece of the PVC pipe 130mm long.
You will need a base in the bottom of the pipe to hold the connector, cut and shape a base to fit in the bottom of the pipe
1.jpg
Glue the base into the pipe - I used contact adhesive and clamped it overnight.
2.jpg
Use a 50mm hole saw to cut a hole for the connector and plug in the base of the pipe base. Keep the clamps in position whilst you drill
3.jpg
Cut out the coin slot - I used a 3mm drill and then needle files to get the slot straight and smooth. Check that a 50 cent coin will fit.

I machined down the connector in my lathe to suit the 50mm hole. If you don't have a lathe - I would probably file the PVC connector to suit the hole (It doesn't require much to be taken off)
4.jpg 6.jpg
Cut off the part that is not threaded and araldite the threaded part into the base of the pipe.
7.jpg
Make up ends out of 19mm thick pine so they are a sliding fit into the pipe. Araldite into position.
8.jpg
Make up legs out of pine and then screw into the timber that is now in the pipe.
10.jpg 11.jpg
Make up your face of the pig, ears, snout (eyes are from Spotlight)
12.jpg
Assemble the pigs face. (I glued and screwed to the body)
13.jpg
Paint to your own colour scheme

I used a cup hook for the tail. I used heated and fitted plastic tube onto the hook so there is no sharp points.
I have made up templates for most parts as I will be making a lot of these.
Keep Safe
Regards
Keith

Well done.
Hopefully, coins and notes will still be around in a few years time so children can grasp the concept of saving.

Another option for the coin slot would be to align it across the back by running a single pass over the circular saw, then using a round file to finish off the two ends. (Nothing like a bit of exposed saw blade to get the heart started)

A top job on the design and execution of this item Keith. You have lots of innovative ideas when making things.
I can't for the life of me understand why they call these Piggy Banks as I have never seen a pig near one to deposit or withdrawn money
Keep them coming.Dallas

Thanks Dallas,
You got me wondering so I googled why -
Here is the answer
"The invention of the piggy bank originates to over 600 years ago in the 15th century when people would use pots to store what money they had. Therefore, whenever people had a few extra coins, they would simply drop it into their clay jars which they referred to as a 'pygg' bank or pot."

Hi All,
Continuing on the Piggy Banks.
Have now made 9.
There is only one downside. All family want one as well as friends. Looks like this might be an ongoing project.
I want to make at least 10 for the needy kids.

They look fantastic Keith. You now have your own little litter of piglets. I hope you can keep up the supply to everyone but also allow you to move on to your next creation for the kids.
You come up with some really smart ideas when you're designing these things.Dallas
