Any wonder the railways went to all over black. Quicker to apply and did not look so bad if dirty.

Keith, once you have finished this engine you might start a career in sign writing.

    Hi Kevin,

I have done quite a bit more reading up on the Thatcher Perkins. The main body of the loco is black. Photos I have sourced looked like it was a dark green. I even purchased the green paint

The tender is Indian Red, wheels are bright red, Cabin - Indian Red. Cowcatcher - Indian Red and boiler body - Black.

Will post a photo of tender later today. Almost finished that.

    Regards

    Keith

    Hi All,

I was going to paint the boiler of this locomotive whilst suspended between centres on my metal turning lathe. Hadn't even measured it up - just assumed it would fit. However, the boiler is way too long to fit between the chuck and the tailstock and in any case - the toolpost is a hindrance.

Spent the last couple of days making up my own support fixture that will allow me to rotate the boiler whilst painting to get an even coat. Used a saw horse as the main support.

    124.jpg

I machined up 2 dead centres in the metal lathe out of 25mm aluminium. The head end is fixed. I drilled a blind hole 1 inch diameter using a forstner bit. The other end is adjustable - I drilled right through. I drilled and tapped an 8mm metric hole and inserted a long setscrew with a locking nut. This allows me to tension up the boiler between centres and it won't come loose.

    125.jpg 126.jpg

When making future locos all I need to do is position the base of the head and tail to get my correct boiler distance. So happy with it I even painted it blue to suit the other machinery / equipment in my workshop.

    Nice one Keith.
If ever you do a diesel outline, you could use this for the frame so you only have "down hand" welding.

    Is the frame a 'Keithbilt'?

Very nice looking one for a project but having the steam chest on the inside does give it lack of detail to be modelled.

THIS has a number of plans which may give an idea of some locos that are available

    Hi All,

Very slow work on the painting of the locomotive.

I have dismantled and labelled all components. All the smaller items are in a box - ready for painting.

Taken lots of photos so I can re-assemble correctly when painting is complete.

The boiler has 5 coats of paint. Colour is Taubmans "Billiard Ball".

The cast iron colour on the chasis is Dulux "Domino"

    Hi All,

Been a while since I posted. It is time consuming carrying out the paintwork and then re-assembling the locomotive.

I am pretty happy how it has come up. I didn't go overboard on the pin striping. I like the Black / Indian Red colour contrast.
For the cables that operate the bell and whistle - I twisted string and maintained the twist by running the "cable" through PVA glue. I then painted it with gold spray acrylic.
The flags are 1865 downloaded and the printed on paper and laminated.
I am really happy with the 147 on the front of the loco. I machined the circular section out of 40mm aluminium.
The numbers and letters on the side were cut out of MDF and hand sanded to 1mm thick and then had 5 coats of yellow acrylic.

The last photos shows the completed internal cabin.

Next is to start on rails, sleepers, ballast etc.
