    Hi Bruce,

It is round. However, I am not happy with the boiler at all. Reconsidering my options. May scrap all the boiler stuff I have done and restart it. Tied up with lawn bowls nearly everyday for the next week, so probably no decision until end of next week.

The good thing about model making - no real time constraints.

    Thanks for your comments.

    Have a top day.

    Regards

    Keith

    Hi All,

I hope everyone had a top Christmas and all have a really good 2020.

The loco has been a constant source of frustration - trying to get the boiler and firebox sections together. I persevered with what I had planned in my last post. I nearly gave up on the whole thing to throw it in the rubbish. I just couldn't get the transition right. But after hours and hours of hand sanding and re-application of body filler and sanding and sanding - I have got the loco into a state that I am OK with. There is still some sanding to do on the firebox section (the primer really highlights where the extra work needs to be carried out). This has been the most difficult locomotive I have built so far. I think the smoke stack will also be a very testing experience.

Here is the loco so far.

I will now get onto the boiler front support section.

    Regards

    Keith

Yes the boiler would not be the easiest to replicate with a tapered section. I would not be surprised if the taper is uneven with more at the top and less at the bottom.
They came up with some odd shapes in the 1800's. Latter boilers did not have a tapered section which probably not only made construction easier but allowed for higher pressure.

    All the best for 2020.

    Hi All,

I have been doing a fair bit of work on the loco - working on the front section. Made up the front boiler support brackets and the front flaired out section that will eventually support the cow catcher. At the moment the loco looks similar to other locos I have built but when I make the cow catcher and large smoke stack and head lamp - it should start to look like a North American loco. Unfortunately I only have about 10 photos of this loco to work off, unlike the Rocket, Stirling Single and the D4 loco which I had heaps of photos. Therefore this loco will be based a bit on guess work - which I hope comes out OK.
The second photo includes a beer can which gives some indication on size.

    Regards

    Keith

Great build - love the detail going into it I think this is going to be a very fine loco.

Only one problems your beer appears to be broken the top is still sealed

    Hi,

Thanks for the post. That is my "Standard" in the shed. Plenty of Crownies and Coronas inside

Probably should have it in the fridge though as a backup

When it comes down to the essentials, most railway engines are the same when comparing them with wheel arrangement and power source. It is only the local embellishments that sets them apart.
An engine built by Rogers, still looks the same if it was used in America or Australia.
Baldwins built tank loco and they all look similar regardless if they were British, American or Australian.
It is features like cow catchers (or lack of), bells and whistles, chimneys, fuel tanks (if deisel), loading gauge and paintwork that really defines the engine. You could also add to the list things like, couplers, brake equipment and even staff exchangers that make the same engine different depending on where it is used.

Cross head guides for the cross head. Cross head connects the piston rod to the connecting rod with the little end. Big end is on the crank which can be on the driven wheel, axle or crankshaft.
Cross head guides can take numerous shapes, but their function is to keep the cross head motion parallel to the cylinder.

This cross head guide appears to be very simple. Nice work Keith.

    Hi All,

I have been working on the drive mechanism on my loco.

There is a fair amount of metal turning involved. Machining up the shafts and making up spacers and washers so that I can get correct clearance and arm alignments. Still have to make the bearing lubricators.

Now onto the other side of the locomotive.

    Regards

    Keith

    Hi All,

Decided to do a bit of work on the smokestack.

I cut out 11 pieces of pine and glued and clamped for a couple of days.

Then I turned to the shape in my wood lathe.

The top edge section is PVC pipe.

The top will also have a grate to stop embers.

    Regards

    Keith
