Spark arresting smoke stack indicating wood burning boiler.
Well turned Keith. Probably a lot easier to make than the tapered boiler.

very nice Keith. I told you that your lathe skills are up to the mark

Can I ask why you did not use one piece of wood and hollow the centre to reduce the weight or will you be hollowing later? Not that it matters still a great job

    Hi Derek,

    Thanks for your comments.

I don't have a chuck on my wood lathe - so I have been using a faceplate. I don't have a method of holding the small end so I could turn out the internal section. Any suggestions on how to do it without a chuck ?????

    Mine is a woodfast lathe

    Regards

    Keith

Attach a piece of wood to the faceplate and bore a hole in the centre and jam the thin end it, Make sure the part is not that tight just tight enough to hold the part. this will hold it to hollow out the centre just remember to take lighter cuts than normal. Drilling out the very centre first will help with the hollowing. When complete remove the faceplate and tap the part-out.

Jam chucks are great for turning many things

    Hi All,

I have completed the crank arms on both sides of the locomotive.

I have also done some riveting around the smokebox section of the boiler.

I needed to make up a special collar / bracket that allows the smokestack to be secured to the boiler (all components can be removed to allow me to paint all the individual parts at a later date).

I am now in the process of constructing the steam dome. The Thatcher - Perkins has an elaborate looking steam dome. This will be turned up on the wood lathe

I see you have had a riveting time. No doubt it was a lot quieter than when the engine was done and more pleasant than doing hot rivets on a hot day.

Drive motion has come up good. Steam dome will be fun (as will the painting).
    Keep up the good work.

    Hi All,

I laminated pine and then turned up the domes in the wood lathe on a faceplate.

I turned up the whistle components out of mild steel and aluminium and then assembled.

    Regards

    Keith

    Looking good Keith.

Glad to see someone is getting shed time.

It’s been raining “cats & dogs” here; over 300mm in the past 48hrs, we have a lake in the back yard, rivers of water down both sides of the house and through my shed under the house.

Yes, a land of drought and flooding rain from time and memorial.

    Cheers Peter

PS - No complaints about the beautiful rain, just hoping & praying it's falling in the west of the state and over the dams!!

    Thanks Peter

You can send some rain down here - we still need a fair bit.

    Take care

    Regards

    Keith

After such a dry spell all the water is doing is running off the surface. Hope things return to normal soon Peter and that you can get back doing what you enjoy
