1890 Melbourne Tram
Hi All,
I have a friend who is a bit of a tram fanatic. That being said, I have decided that my next build will be an1890 Melbourne tram.
A little history.
The first genuine attempt to construct a tramway network was the construction of the Richmond Cable tramline by the Melbourne Tramway and Omnibus Company in 1885.
The first electric tram line was the Box Hill to Doncaster tramway which opened in 1889.
My build is an 1890 electric tram that ran on the Box Hill to Doncaster line in the 1890's
This will be a 1/7th scale build.
The tram will be approximately 1200mm long.
I will be endeavouring to improve my modelling glazing skills as well as improving detailing techniques on the tram interior. I am looking forward to this build.
Here is a photo of a Melbourne 1890 electric tram.

Regards
Keith

Hi Peter,
Thanks for your comment.
On all the locos I have built I only work off what photos I can get off the internet. I then use a known dimension (most of the time it's the diameter of the wheels) as my main datum point and then scale up from that dimension.
The time consuming bit at the start is trying to get enough photographs off the internet to get an accurate build of the locomotive or in this case - the tram. It can take hours of Google work to get enough to complete the build. Can be frustrating a bit - but I enjoy it and tend to learn a lot. Not a lot of photos of the tram yet but enough to make a good start.
Regards
Keith

Is there a tram museum anywhere? I know there’s one in Sydney and also a railway one.

The irony the first tramline went from box hill to Doncaster yet box hill is now where the tramline finishes. Doncaster always putting their hand up for a train line or a tram as it’s only serviced by bus.
things I learnt today,
good luck with the build.

If you google Ferrymead Trams in Christchurch they have photos inside and out I think of a Hills Tram that might be some help.

G'Day Peter, That's a great place.
My wife & I spent a wonderful morning there riding the trams and looking around in January 2020.
Even got to ride up to the sheds were the driver did a changeover from the open to enclosed tram.
I must sent Keith some photos though I don't recall a tram as old as he is modelling.
Cheers Peter

The Tram museum in Melbourne is in the old Hawthorn tram depot at the Southern end of Glenferrie Rd. Melbourne Tram Museum
There is also the Tram Preservation Society at Bylands near Wallan. It has a complete set of the W class trams. Welcome to The Tramway Museum Society of Victoria Inc.
At one of the Bendigo depots, your are able to wander round the few that they have there. It is next to the Bendigo Woollen Mills outlet. Some of Melbourne's W Class trams are being re-furbished at Bendigo.Last edited by Chesand; 27th September 2021 at 04:45 PM. Reason: added links
