    Default 1932 buick toys and joys

    have been sidetracked a little from toys lately, but cut out a pine version of the toys and joys plan number 53 on sunday

    spent yesterday (when it wasn't too hot) .. sanding bits and today did a few glue ups and undercoated a couple of bits

    this one is to be a toy (plaything) for a youngster so the axle holes are bored all the way through and will take 8mm threaded rod ... the roof and guards to be painted purple and the bumpers will be silver ... black wheels with a purple hub of course .. i often (not always) make one out of pine first, reinforce it a bit and paint it brightly ... it can be a little rougher in places and i iron out any problem places before i use good wood .. the kids love them anyway

    i will follow this more slowly with one out of some jarrah decking that i picked up the other day with silky oak highlights (maybe the guards, radiator and bumper)

    i have some other (redgum) wheels to make as well for another project so may be some days before i get around to doing more on this

    regards david

    first coat of the purple ... 16 hours between coats slows it down ... silver on the bumpers ... and cut a few wheel blanks ... still have to shape them but while i had the jigs set up for the bandsaw and sander, i cut a few for other projects as well

    may not get back to this before easter though

    wheels onto a pen mandrel on the lathe to add a bit of tread;
    then to the drill press to cut a hub opening;
    back to the pen mandrel to add a little shape;
    just needs some sanding and painting.

    they will be fine for the toy ... for the model i will probably do a bit more to them

    had to go away just before easter so on return did the last of the painting on the wheels (white) and then fitted them to the car ... i must have either cut the guard wrongly or put it on wrongly as the wheels on one side rubbed a bit ... had to take 1/32 off the diameter and reshape the edges and the tread and then stain and varnish the black again, so delayed a bit

    here it is though and will go to one of the great great nephews at xmas ... when i get around to the model it will get headlights, spare wheels on the the front set into the guards and a luggage rack on the back, but for the toy, this will do

    i originally intended it for a young friend but i feel it is not robust enough for a three year old, so now i need to get on with some more robust toys ... one for her and others for the charity xmas tree ... at least i won't be rushing things in december

    regards david
