Great fun today I found some 3mm MDF and I think I've worked out a bit of a mystery surrounding the 1938 Earls Court Show bike.
Which is Terry's bike and the one I'm making.
I'll try not to make this to long winded but it is quite interesting.
Fletty was nice enough to send me down his book on the history of the Brough Superior (Thankyou Mate)
It's a great read and quite comprehensive on the man and his machines.
Terry's bike takes pride of place in the book in a colour section.
But I was a little surprised when the first paragraph started with:
"thought to have been displayed at the 1938 Motorcycle Show held at Earls Court"
Further on in the book I found a picture that seemed to explain why there maybe some doubt.
And here it is.
IMG_8201.jpg
The caption that goes with the picture reads:
The 1939 SS100 model presented at the 1938 Earls Court Show. The machine survives in very original condition and is also featured in a colour section.
After looking at the picture for awhile it becomes very clear it's not the same bike as Terry's.
It leaves you wondering which one is the Show Bike?.
After only a short time studying Brough's I'm no expert, but I do claim a good eye for detail.
The bike in the picture above is the 1936 SS100 prototype that was displayed at The Olympia (same motorcycle show different name and location)
By 1938 Brough Superiors where fitted with Norton gearbox's, this one has a Sturmey Archer which they stopped using in 1936.
This bike has a rear stand which was changed to a roll-on centre stand by 1937.
And the rear of the bike is rigged not sprung which was standard on 1938 and 39 models.
I'm sure there's no way George Brough would turn up at the Earls Court Show with a motorcycle that was two years out of date.
Now on to something about building the Brough!.
I've used some of fletty's photos with the magic red dot to scale parts of the barrels.

So tomorrow I can start making out and cutting the fins.
Cheers
Trev.
PS Hey Charlie see how I don't get caught up with pointless detail about things I'm building!.

Trev
Before I read the last line - I was about to post about the amount of detail - for someone who doesn't go into detail
Regards
Charlie

I got started on the fins for the barrels today.
Not a hole lot to show but it was nice to get some sawdust on myself.
I cut out the 11 fins needed for one of the barrels and drilled the recess's out for the pushrods with an 18 spade bit.
I thought I'd have a go at shaping each of the fins to have a taper like the real deal.

I have a piece of 2mm MDF glued in place to set the fin on a slight angle.
The bolt through the centre of the fin acts as a pivot point and I can turn the fin in place on a piece of sandpaper.
Not very high tech but it's getting the job done.

I've been using the other end of the 2mm MDF to act as a platform to mark the edge of the fins giving me a line to sand down to.

As I said not much done but just great to be building again.
Cheers

Great to see you getting your "hands dirty" Trev.
It's going to be tremendous watching your innovations (particularly without a lathe) to see how you get such a top class build.
Really HAPPY you're back
