I thought I'd make a start on the left side of the engine today.
I've been looking forward to building the magneto for some time.
Although it just starts out as a box with a rounded top, they usually end
    up looking pretty cool.

    IMG_1386.jpg IMG_1388.jpg

I really like it when an engine gets to this stage.
Putting the basic shape of the magneto on it looks a little odd.
Being so obviously made of MDF.

    IMG_1387.jpg

I've made a few magneto's in the past, and the one thing I've found is that
the cover is the most important part.
At the moment it's painted in primer.
If you don't get the look of it right it just doesn't work.
At different times I've tried steaming and laminating to get the shape.
Even scoring the lines but when it's painted it always ended up looking just like that,
a piece of wood with a line scratched in it.

    IMG_1389.jpg

So now what I do is to make each part separately that way when it's painted,
    their obviously two different parts.
It really makes a big difference to the finished piece.
Tomorrow I'll work on the shaft drive.

    Cheers.

It probably doesn't look like I got to much done today.
But this one piece took almost nine hours to shape.
I still need to finish some detailing but that's for tomorrow.

    IMG_1390.jpg

The plate which goes on the back of the magneto.
Is made from 2 pieces of 3mm MDF and some PVC.
And a hole lot of bodyfiller to form it's shape.

    IMG_1400.jpg

The shaft coming out of it goes to the drive gear at the front of the engine.
It's fiddley work but I love it.

I got a bit more of the magneto done today.

    IMG_1407.jpg IMG_1403.jpg

I still need to make the distributor and points cover.

    IMG_1404.jpg IMG_1405.jpg

A couple more days should see it done.
Then I can get going on the Generator.

    IMG_1401.jpg

The Generator will be belt driven off the shaft of the Magneto.

    Cheers.

Whats the odds he ends up using MDF dust mixed with the overspray fumes from the aerosols as the fuel for this motor , wouldn't put it past him

Your skill and ingenuity is unbelievable, cant wait till I see it in the flesh

That magneto seriously reminds me of the old hand-cranked pencil sharpeners that we used to have at school.

I'm still working on the Pencil Sharpener (Magneto).
I got part of the front made today, and added some colour.

    IMG_1408.jpg

You know it really does look like an old Pencil Sharpener.
The part I made today is constructed from MDF, bodyfiller and four pieces of a ballpoint pen.

    IMG_1412.jpg IMG_1411.jpg

I'll have a go at a distributor cap tomorrow it will be painted a Bakelite colour.
After that a few screws here and there to add some detail and it should be done.

    IMG_1415.jpg IMG_1416.jpg

With the Magneto in place the engine is starting to fill out nicely.

    Cheers.

    Looking good.

So it's not just me. The shaft adds to the effect - looks like a pencil being sharpened.

You amaze me with what you use for raw materials.
I'm enjoying this build immensely. Keep up the good work.

After a hole lot of mucking around I got the distributor cap done.
I tried a few different shades of brown for a Bakelite colour.
But in the end Satin Black seemed to look the best.

    IMG_1430.jpg IMG_1431.jpg

There's still some detailing to do in the way of clamps for the cap and a few screws here and there.
But I'll push on and start on the generator.
I've got a target I'm shooting for by the Australia Day weekend.
It would be nice to have the majority of the engine done by then.
I can pickup on the smaller details later.

    IMG_1438.jpg

But I'm really happy with the way the magneto's come out.
Even though it still looks like a pencil sharpener.

    IMG_1433.jpg IMG_1442.jpg

Anyway I'll get back to it.
    Cheers.

I am continually amazed by the standard of work and the pleasure
you are giving to we mere mortals!!

I can only imagine the pleasure you must derive from doing this
sort of modelling and I thank you for your selflessness in sharing
    the journey here.

I also amazed at the speed in which you are building this model.
