    Default 2/3 Scale Motorcycles

These are two of my 2/3 scale bikes. A 1920 Harley Boardracer, and a 1916 Ariel outfit.
Both are built from recyclied materials, mainly wood with some PVC pipe, steel and bicycle wheels.
On both bikes the engines, petrol tanks, gearboxs and seats are all made from timber.
Most of the rest their construction is just stuff you can find around the house.

The best part of building this way is trying to find things thar can be used to form a shape.

    Ariel 3.jpg

The horn on the Ariel, is made from PVC pipe bent over a candle flame. The bulb of the horn is
two rexona rollon lids cut down, and glued together, and it's mouth is the neck of a coke bottle.
The primer on the headlight is a five cent peice.

    Ariel 2.jpgHarley 2.jpg

The exhaust pipe on the Ariel, is a timber fishtail on piece of PVC pipe.

The footplates on the Ariel, are made from MDF and bodyfiller.
The front fork damping adjuster ( the thing that looks like a star infront of the petrol tank),
is made from a coke can.
It takes me about a year to build each one.
But most of that time is spent, wondering how the heck I can find something I need, to make it
    look like something it isn't.
I've got to say it's geat fun!
Anyway I hope you like them.
    Cheers.

Default No, They look the real deal!!!

No, They look the real deal!!!
You workmanship and attention to deal makes the bikes look so real, very well done.....
Maybe a photo of two beside a full size bike would show off the extent of the build.
    Cheers, crowie

    Default excellent stuff!

Mate, that is awesome. Ive been thinking of doing a fullsize replica of a 1942, 45 cubic inch Harley WLA.
I wondered how to go about it and youve just given me a ton of ideas. did you have a workshop manual or some sort of dimensions of the original to work from? Thats sort of where Im stuck at the moment, dont have anything to give me size/scale etc.
I was scratching my head thinking how do I make the frame out of timber but the pvc will be perfect.
    Well done, whats next?
    cheers, billy

    Hey Billy,
    Glad you like the bikes.
I don't use much in the way of reference or workshop manuals, I just get some pictures and build what I see.
When it comes to scale, I work it out from the size of the rims I'm using.
I try to build as much as I can from timber, but if there's something else I can see that will do the job and it's at hand I'll use it.
PVC Pipe is one that I make use off. You'd be surprised what you can do with it!
Held over a flame it can be bent, stretched and twisted.
Here's a couple of pic's of a goose neck horn, on one of my Billycarts.
The hole thing is made from PVC. The tube of the horn is a piece of PVC, stretched while held over a gas stove.
And then rapped in cord. The neck is again bent in the same way.
The mouth is formed from a piece of PVC, cut in half, shaped and flared.
The head it's self is formed from body filler.

As for whats next, I need to finish of my full size TARDIS.
Then I think a Stanley Steamer 2/3 scale would be Kool!
Anyway I hope some of this helps.
    Cheers.

Lovely bikes both are a credit to you. Whatever you build next would be interesting and a WIP would be very nice

I was looking in the cupboard today, and found this.

    IMG_0641.jpg IMG_0639.jpg

It's a 2/3 scale barrel for an Indian straight four Motorcycle.
It's made from MDF and PVC pipe.
Although it's a bit rough around the edges, and I didn't finish it.
I thought I'd put it on the post, as it shows pretty well the detail
you can get from some basic materials.

    IMG_0640.jpg IMG_0642.jpg

The base of the barrel is MBF, with a cylinder of PVC glued to it.
All the fin's above the PVC are cut individually, and held together with a piece of dowell through their center.
The exhurst and sparkplug ports, were drilled and sleeved after the barrel was constructed.
Then it's all blended together with bodyfiller.
One of the things I enjoy most about what I do. Is making simple shapes combine in a way, that they make something that
    looks complex.
    Cheers.
By the way I have to say, It's great to have found such a great forum for my work.
And I'd like to thank you all, for making me feel right at home!
