    Default A few toys

Finally got back into the shed and decided to have a change from the roadster and make a few toys. The first three pics are just the wood thicknessed and the patterns stuck onto the wood. The first pic is from a plan I came across on the net. They are described as old fashioned toy cars. I am making two; both will be made from Tassie oak and jarrah. One will have the jarrah to the inside the other Tassie oak. The second is a push along chick from Tassie oak but this one will be painted. The third is a walking dog it is about seventeen inches long and one and a half inch thick laminated from two three quarter inch boards. These last two toys are from a book called one hundred and fifty weekend woodworking projects. The final pic is a test fit of the legs and wheels of the dog.

Good once in a while to do a change up. Look like nice projects. I'll have to google.

I have finished all the parts for the dog except for the axle pegs. When I make the axle pegs I will do a WIP for anyone who may be interested. The first pic is the dog with the ears glued in place. The eye is only sitting there at this stage, I will fix the eyes last. The second pic shows the legs and wheels ready for oiling.

Today I made the axle pegs. Sorry about the first two hazy pics. The axels are 8mm dia and I made the caps 12mm dia. I put the 12mm dia dowel in the chuck of my mini metal lathe and a centre drill in the drill chuck in the tailstock by using a centre drill you avoid the wander that you get with a normal twist bit. After drilling a starting hole with the centre drill I then drilled a larger hole with a twist bit and then finally the finished size. The third photo shows how you can get the hole almost perfectly central using this method. I would recommend a centre drill to everyone they are excellent for starting holes in end grain they do not wander like a twist bit. I then parted them off using a very fine razor show and glued them to the 8mm dowel with super glue. I then put them back in the lathe and finished them off. The final pic shows two finished axle pegs sitting in on of the dog’s legs.

You do have the patience for the small stuff. Try macro setting on your camera for the closeups and they should be a bit clearer.
