A good day on the loco other than stopping and preparing some wood for the Mercedes truck and took the opportunity to do some for all the loco wheels.

Once I got started I began the build of the cowcatcher and the bracket for this and the front cylinder bracket.

Some short pieces of Oak that are ideal for the tanks at the back and the pistons and their covers, which again is another job for tomorrow

After work on the truck, I decided to turn the two tanks and the two pistons with their respective end caps this was a relatively short task, by this time it was getting quite warm in the workshop so I changed the heat of the workshop to the heat of the kitchen a cooked the wife a meal.
I must be a gluten for punishment as after the meal I went into the hot greenhouse to water everything in there and weed around the plants

Started with cutting out the cab windows cleaning up with a file made this easy.
20200604_180733 (1024x768).jpg
Marking up the boiler was easier than expected even though it still took some time. Improvised flat surface as I could not be bothered to get the granite surface plate out.

Drilled all the holes in the boiler as well as the pistons which in the photo are glued together
20200605_172418 (1024x768).jpg20200605_172453 (1024x768).jpg
Just could not resist dry fitting some of the pieces on the boiler. The funnel looks oversize in this picture but that is the photo angle.

The first of the major parts being glued up it should now start to take shape

Derek, what you refer to as pistons look more like cylinders, cylinder covers and crosshead guides.
Like your car, the engine has pistons but you generally do not see them as they are in the cylinders.
Your cylinder covers have a hole for the piston rod (and gland for a steam tight seal).
Watching the build with interest.

Not much done but have managed to start glueing up. At least I feel it is starting to move forward a little soon I will have to think about turning the wheels so that I can get all the linkages made

"...starting to move forward a little..."
It will move forward (and back) a little easier on wheels.
Looking great. I can't wait to see the wheels.

Not exactly the correct detail for the cab but better than nothing which the plans show and not as much detail as Keiths either. As well as the funnel, sand dome, steam dome and side panels that is all I have done on the loco

What Bruce Said

14th June 2020, 08:42 AM #30
Thank you Bruce and Keith.
Not been a good couple of days on the workshop front but at least got some more gardening done.
First of all the cutters, I ordered for the tractor build were incorrect so waiting for replacements. Then started to rough out the wheels on the bandsaw for the train wheels and the blade broke(No replacement) and had to resort to the larger bandsaw with the wider blade which could not cut tight corners without changing that blade. And finally had to dig out my second lathe so that I could turn the wheels to the correct diameter(the attachments only fitted this one).
Anyway managed to rough cut the wheels and then get them mounted I now have three different sized wheel blanks for the loco. The four larger wheels I remounted with a smaller one between each pair by doing this was able to turn the rims of these as well as sand them. So at the end of today you can see the progress

The day did not end there had a BBQ and the wife said eat inside instead of on the patio luckily as I took the meat off of the BBQ the heavens opened and we had a downpour but the food still tasted good all the same.
