billy's hotrod shop
Thought I should put some pics up of the hotrods.
The red one is one I started ages ago, mocking up the wheels now to get diameters right.
The black one has a tassie oak chassis which has had one coat of black japan stain, the body is maple, two coats of black japan, not happy with the look of that so will probably paint over it or add flames or something. The engine block is oregon, cylinder heads, carbies and air intake assorted hardwood scraps. The wheels are two pieces of hardwood glued together with 2 part epoxy, rough cut on bandsaw then turned on the lathe. Rear axle is 12.5 mm dowel from an old kids cot I found on the side of the road. Axle blocks are glued and nailed to chassis.(Had to use a g clamp to pull the nails in as couldnt get a hammer in there)Trying to get stance right before committing to height of front wheel attachment at the chassis. Exhaust next???
cheers, billy

Thanks for posting Billy and giving us some work in progress details. Once my skill level goes up another notch I would like to attempt a semi - model type toy.
But, that will be for next year as I have a full program for this year trying to make a few Fire Engines for some disadvantaged kids this Christmas
That is the beauty of Phil's ( Prime Mover's ) plans. For the experienced they are a piece of cake. ( Attention. Munrubben ) For some of us mere mortals, they are a fantastic learning curve to bigger and greater things.
Who would think that I had to come into the Toy Section and find that this is an enjoyable way to improve all my wood working skills from preparation, wood selection, choice of right tools, intricate work that requires me to be a bit arty farty and yet if I cut some corners nobody notices except me.
These toys are more than toys to me. They are a learning curve, so instead of practicing my skills on a bit of scrap wood and then binning it to start again I can take that same bit of scrap and hopefully turn it into something that a child will appreciate.'
Thanks guys.
Peter
