I got a bunch of free over 100 year old timber
G'Day All,
Look what I got given today, a whole bunch of free over 100 year old timber.
A mate is moving house and dismantled a 1896 foot pump organ from Boston.
He said that he thinks it might be American Cherry, light but hard timber;
though there is a number of different coloured timbers in the dis-assembled parts.
All great for toymaking.
Any assistance in identifcation would be appreciated but generally I'll just use the colours for good contrast in the toys.
Cheers, "a very gratefull crowie"

I can just imagine which peice goes into which project. I, like you, recycle LUMBER into most of my projects. I look forward to seeing which which peice became what.

Wow Crowie Awesome score. I had a look on Wikipedia link here.
Mason and Hamlin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
At the bottom are several models and it seems they are all made of Mahogany. There is also other woods listed such as bubinga, walnut and rosewood.
Man those pieces are going to make some awesome toys. If only the wood could talk.

Dang Crowie!!
A buddy of mine restores antique pipe organs and having helped him on a few projects, I kinda am torn on whether that's a great killer wood find or sad to see another vintage organ go to scrap. It is a good find though and at least the wood will be used and live again as another heirloom piece!
I hadn't even considered organs as a source of scrap though and I do have a couple of connections. I might have to make a few calls! LOL!

Picked up the timber from the bellows today
Picked up the timber from the bellows today.
It some sort of thick 3 ply veneer.
Check out the air vibrator too, made 21sy June 1885.
Also the long solid piece of timber with all the pins in it.
So beautiful, all this old, old timber; seems ashame to cut it up for toys but better than the bin.
Cheers, crowie

My neighbour suggested a couple of jewellery boxes but my skills for the precision corners are still very much a work in progress and I'd hate to waste such beautiful timber on "just having a go" then stuffing it up.....crowie

Hi Pete what happened to the key board it may have been made from ebony and ivory maybe.
Do you think the organ would have been worth anything, it seems a shame to pull it down? Would it be possible to rebuild it or is to late.May your saw stay sharp and your nails never bend

I just googled that Organ Make & No.
You should have a look to see what is was & to hear this Chap having a play.
Like someone said, I too, hate to see beautiful Instruments being dumped.
Hope we get see an Item or 2 when you get to use it.Regards,
issatree.

Sad to see it in this state. Almost too good for toys unless they are a truly representative model of something.
We will not see ithe results here, they will be in the scale model section. I hope you do not use it when pine would have done.
