Default First Class Passenger Carriage (Early 1900's)

    Hi All,

Enough time cleaning out the shed and making train whistles - time for the next project, although Cathie wants me to redo our front lawn / garden area. May have to try and squeeze that in.

Am going to build my own carriage to sit behind the just completed 4-6-2 locomotive.

It will be a combination First Class AA and a First Class / Second Class AB carriage. However - this carriage will be First Class only with 4 carriage compartments that will seat 6 people to a compartment. Both entry ends to the carriage will have some open First Class smoking area seating - before getting to the individual compartments. All seats will be black leather with brass coated overhead luggage racking. Sash windows (at this stage anyway) opening at the top will prevent cinders from inconveniencing the "passengers". There will hopefully be some fine finials and other woodwork extravagances for this carriage. Probably also need to include a loo and handbasin.

Of course this will be the same scale as the locomotive - 1/7th scale. I am limited with space for the final display - therefore the carriage will be 1800mm overall length. That will make the loco - carriage combination 3900mm long.

I anticipate a longer period of time to build this than the locomotive. I expect between 12 and 18 months.

Thanks for all the support on my locomotive - it is really appreciated.

Attached are a few photos and plans I have got my hands on - but generally I think a lot will be expanded upon as I progress. It will be a passenger car that I think I would like to travel in.

    Regards

    Keith

Nah, forget the loo. This train is stopping all stations. Either that or we cross our legs.
I'm on board. If I can't drive or fire, I'll be the guard! Have my whistle and flags.

    Hi All,

Well I have started work on the carriage. I decided to start from the bottom so to speak, working on the wheels of the bogies.

These are 155mm OD they are 19mm wide. I am using the same technique of manufacture as I did with the loco wheels, making inner hub / spoke section (9 spokes) and the outer wheel rim.

There is a sketch I made of the wheel as part of my drawing up of the timber - you can see how the wheel will look.

Marked out and cut out the inner and outer blanks. Instead of trying to turn between centres - I used the small faceplate adaptor and screwed my blanks to it for turning on the wood lathe. What an improvement on running true and I think as a consequence the finish quality of the inners and outers.

Next job will be to cut out the hole in the outer rims to suit the inner hub / spoke section.

    Regards

    Keith

Sorry - photos inserted in reverse order

    Default Fares please

Can I be the conductor collecting all the fares from you guys? I could do with the money, and it would be great to meet all of the WWF passengers.

Actually I could donate the fares to the maser builder to offset some of his costs in taking us on this ride. Yeah, that's a better idea!

This is going to be an interesting ride, so aaall aboard.

    Alan...

P.S - were there conductors on trains like this? I might have made myself redundant before getting started.

Line drawings of Victorian Railways rolling stock have been published.
While I do not have a copy I have included a sample of a former state carriage "Victoria". It appears in photographs of the opening of the railway to Timboon. This carriage latter became a work vehicle before the body was purchased by the scouts and located in Carnegie (Victoria) for a number of years. The body still exists, probably somewhere at Newport.

The reason for leaving out the sanitary facilities was due to the shortened version of carriage Keith is building.

Keith good idea to get the wheels rolling and start at the bottom and work your way up.
