Not quite as good as you and Derek - but I think I am "on track - nearly". The springs on the bogies (6 on each bogie poking out each side) are a bit of a challenge. Will be very time consuming - but I think the detail will add to the look. Still a lot of sanding and cleanup on the wheels to go. Really taking my time to try and get a really good finish.

Looks like you have those wheels done pat now and utilising your array of machines. How is the new scrollsaw for doing the fine work, and what type of blade are you using in it?

Yes I am happy how the rims and hubs have come out. The best thing I did was putting them on a faceplate and turning - much more control and less "chatter". The scrollsaw is good for precision cuts. I am using an 18TPI pin blade. I am cutting the 19mm pine at maximum speed. The machine is a Ryobi. It has good variable speed control and easy to change the blade for internal cutting.
Not sure about the leaf spring - may do them rough with jigsaw and then file them smooth to the required finish size. It will be a bit of trial and error

Hi All,

Haven't posted for a while. I have had all sorts of problems trying to figure out and then make up the double leaf springs for the bogies. They are in groups of three springs and there is one group on each side of the bogie - protruding out. I have made one set - 3 to go.

I have made up 4 lots of leaf springs (good learning curve), but not happy at any with them - some were way out of scale - not even going to show photos of them. Spent 20 hours+ on these I am going to throw away - but happy enough with that - I think I nearly have it correct now.

This set in the photo is made out of MDF as the base shape and I have adhered cork sheet as the leaves of the spring (on top of each other). Lots of cutting out and alignment issues. The spring bosses are pine. I drilled them and then filed a "V" to suit the MDF base and then glued. The spacers between each leaf spring had to be made as well. Cut and filed out of aluminium tube.
Once painted - the cork gives a nice texture - which I am happy with.
Still another coat of paint to go on these.

The thing is you only see the end of the springs on the bogie - but need to make it look realistic.

Hi All,

Well I have finally got the double leaf springs pretty much done. There still needs a little bit of sanding and paint recoating on them, but quite happy. I have taken a photo showing how the springs will be located across the bogie. The wheels are not in the correct plane (but gives some idea)
The compression sprins are real springs which I have cut to correct length flattened ends and then removed the zinc in hydrochloric acid. I will turn up the compression spring bases in the lathe. These will be timber supports.
Still have 3 wheels still to file and sand ( an at times tedious task ) the good thing is you can make up other components and then get inspired again - and get back on the boring bits.

The more I do on this carriage (not much to show at this stage) the more I realise that this is going to be a long, but really enjoyable "journey"

Back to the old Fitting and Turning days of many years past today.

Made up the axles for the bogie wheels. The extension pieces on both sides the axle is where it will be supported in the plummer blocks. I have come up with an idea where I will be able to replicate the bearing supports and will be able to remove the shafts from the bearings if I need to.

It is good having the rails already partially made so I can see how the wheels will sit on the rails.

Bit of design work now, combining a couple of different bogie frames to produce a combination frame that looks the best.

Careful Charlie it's sound's like your right on the edge of a classic Duck Fudge!.
But I'm shore whatever design you go with the end result will look fantastic.
Although the purists may not be to pleased!.
