Fantastic. How do you wrap the ply(?) cover all the way around the spine? Is it soaked before hand?

Hi Cava, We discussed using ply or thin timber for the cover but have not progressed to that point yet. We don't have facilities to steam timber so there may be some extra sanding or carving to do to mold the cover to the rounded spine. Adding a small thin curved bit of timber to the ends of the spine might give us the desired result of a fully hard covered book. It would be painted over so you would not see the joins. I feel the original was all hand carved . Possibly in some south east Asian country. It has an Indian feel to it's construction and paint work. Sorry I can't be more specific as it's a work in progress. Regards, the cooroy toymaker.

Hello C/T, where is exactly the farmers market - Cooroy or closer to the Sunny coast?

I will be up that way sometime in the next 6 months.

    Default yer

Yes Crowie, I am looking forward to it - saves me going shopping with the angry ones (I keep saying aren't you finished in here - shops), man they don't like that one iota

I'm heading for the hills when I'm up there, might have to go the the Tool Exchange in Little Mountain, its not far from Buddina.

Valuable lesson for you young fellas, when there is only one male (moi) and gaggle of beauties (3 or more), keep your mouth zippered, stapled and super glued, they love pouncing - verbally that is.

    cheers
    Stevo

    Default Pins and things

Although I'm primarily a toy maker and have been for the past 30 years I still like to explore new disciplines in woodworking that are within my skill set.
Having said that, this last week I've been testing the waters of a little known woodworking field, that of wooden hair and shawl decorations. Namely; Hair Barrettes, Hair Pins, Hair Sticks, Wooden Shawl Pins and Hair Combs etc.

Here are my first attempts. I'm using Red Gum, silky oak, kuila, kuari pine, ash and red cedar and anything else I can get my hands on.

    DSCF0178.JPG
DSCF0193.JPGDSCF0194.JPGDSCF0195.JPG I sold all these shawl pins
DSCF0199.JPG This was a failure because it was supposed to be in a semi circle shape to hold the pin. Maybe some Kiwi will buy this as an ornament.
    DSCF0200.JPG
    DSCF0215.JPG
DSCF0217.JPG Another failure. Not bent enough to hold enough hair.

    DSCF0235.JPG
DSCF0236.JPG another failure, once again not enough bend. I might be able to recycle it as a shawl pin
I finished all these item with wax.

    have a good weekend
    Bye for now

    Default Harry Potter Party Props.

    Hi All,
A self imposed year long sabbatical away from the sawdust and machinery has done little to dampen my enthusiasm for woodwork. I recently got back into woodworking when I got an order to supply some props for a Harry Potter themed 30th birthday party. I could've spent a lot more time on the finish of the signs but as they will only be used for one night I let them go with plain wood. Staining or putting a blow torch to them could've given them a more rustic and aged look. So here they are for your enjoyment. Maybe they will inspire you to have a go at making props for a themed party.

Good to see your artistic creations again. Always inspiring.
Why the 12 months off, did you loose the thrill of creating?

    Hi Dallas.
I injured my good leg. (unrelated to woodwork). As a result I have to limit my activities even more. I retired from volunteer work at the Camphor Laurel Woodworkers as well. Thank you for your concern.
    Kind regards,
    Cooroy Toymaker

    PS.
Some of the Harry Potter props I made in situ and my daughter Maddison as Hermione Granger with her wand.
